Oh my gosh ... Exit82! I’m so happy you’re still here. I hope all’s been well with you and yours. I’m a little farflung these days to get by like I used to ... miss those days.
Oh, you have no idea what a treat it was to See so many handles I hadn’t seen in some time ... likewise, MHGinTN. I hope all’s been well for you and yours.
There must be in this room the makings of at least that number of unscrupulous, treacherous, ruthless egotists. The choice is still before you: and I hope you will not take my hard words about your possible future characters as a token of disrespect to your present characters.
And the prophecy I make is this. To nine out of ten of you the choice which could lead to scoundrelism will come, when it does come, in no very dramatic colours. Obviously bad men, obviously threatening or bribing, will almost certainly not appear. Over a drink, or a cup of coffee, disguised as triviality and sandwiched between two jokes, from the lips of a man, or woman, whom you have recently been getting to know rather better and whom you hope to know better still- just at the moment when you are most anxious not to appear crude, or naïf or a prig- the hint will come.
It will be the hint of something which the public, the ignorant, romantic public, would never understand: something which even the outsiders in your own profession are apt to make a fuss about: but something, says your new friend, which "we"- and at the word "we" you try not to blush for mere pleasure- something "we always do."
And you will be drawn in, if you are drawn in, not by desire for gain or ease, but simply because at that moment, when the cup was so near your lips, you cannot bear to be thrust back again into the cold outer world. It would be so terrible to see the other mans face- that genial, confidential, delightfully sophisticated face- turn suddenly cold and contemptuous, to know that you had been tried for the Inner Ring and rejected. And then, if you are drawn in, next week it will be something a little further from the rules, and next year something further still, but all in the jolliest, friendliest spirit.
It may end in a crash, a scandal, and penal servitude; it may end in millions, a peerage and giving the prizes at your old school. But you will be a scoundrel.
That is my first reason. Of all the passions, the passion for the Inner Ring is most skillful in making a man who is not yet a very bad man do very bad things.

Utopia: The Perennial Heresy
(Sheed & Ward, 1967, pp. 132-133)
Mankind's attempts at total, utopian integration will manage to move forward only on that day when artificial sentiments support artificial objectives, when natural sentiments are torn out by the roots and replaced by false feelings and aspirations.
The utopian assumes that the vistas he exposes to mankind are so glorious that we can show adequate tribute only in a permanent state of enthusiasm.
Although enthusiasm usually manifests itself in loudly voiced approval, it is, basically, a constant affirmation of unity and pledge of participation.16
Yet, as Lord Percy of Newcastle notes in The Heresy of Democracy, the hectic search for unity must entail mob violence and legalized terror; it lies in the more fundamental fact that a people, thus summoned to demonstrate its unity as the precondition of its liberty, much regard enthusiasm as the first duty of citizenship.
Cheers, EternalHope! =)
You know .... seeing how many still are around who might enjoy an Olden Days thread, it’s stupid not to hang out a bit. Cheers, Vendome.
Loon, actually.
Have you ever done the etymology, as best you can with slang, on Kook? =)

I think you are correct in your assessment- those who seem to have it all, and live a charmed or powerful life must in their deepest corner know they are condemned, if they reject the Truth of Jesus Christ.
They may have a good run, but it is just a flash in the pan.
As for their ideological precursors who enjoyed no such riches, power or fame in their lifetime- they are just shit outta luck...
With this episode we see the demonic power of 'film teaching'. I wonder, how many who watched this episode realized what their minds were swallowing through the eyegate, so carefully arranged to degrade Western moral tradition, the Western taboo structure regarding the sanctity of nascent life if you will?Superintendant Tennison starts our lesson with a 'termination', to end a 'pregnancy and subsequent responsibilities of a child' threat to her independence which is so vital to her career.
To justify this Tennison career, the subsequent story proves to 'us' just how vital is her contribution to 'the society'!
The story unfolds in demonically brilliant fashion, teaching malleable minds that 'terminations' (abortions) such as Tennison used are the better alternative to silencing a child that has made a young woman's dreams of a career 'intolerable' so she too does a termination ... except the child is nearly two by the time this 'other' termination is done via smothering.
To justify this Tennison career, we are introduced to a pedophile who is, at least in his mind, cured of his twisted sexually deviant nature acquired as it was via his own sexual abuse at age five. The fellow cop 'rubes' holding still to the outrage of pedophiles defiling and murdering their victims --murdering their innocence if not their life-- are portrayed carefully as wrong, just wrong at all levels of their reasoning.
Yes, we see why Western civilization as inherited from the Reagan-Thatcher generation is 'antiquated'. All hail the new morality, based as it is on transactional, utilitarian --as reasoned by godless brilliance-- purchase of what the "I" wants. And of course, the progressives who feed this poison to the culture award folks like fellow traveler Merrin for her talented portrayal of this 'new morality'. Thus her beauty and talent are enlisted to bring upon us the 'new age'.
Western Civilization is embracing and dying in the 'god is dead' reasoning supported by this transactional behavior, where there is no ultimate authority of Good and Evil, no Truth by which to measure right and wrong except the situational ethic transaction hallmarked by a sliding scale of moment by moment weighing of what is right and wrong situationally.
Without a doubt, these episodes of Prime Suspect are brillaintly written and acted. Helen Mirren is stellar in her portrayal of Superintendent Jane Tennison. I doubt even she realizes how she is being used by demonic brilliance, to erode and thus destroy the taboo structure which was vital to Western Civilization strength
What are you, some kind of kook?
