Discovering the American Majority with the NRA and Conservative Politicians (The 90% figure, again)
The American Prospect ^ | May 6. 2013 | Paul Waldman

Posted on 05/06/2013 11:25:20 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

I have a piece going up later today over at CNN.com on the NRA convention, but there's something I raise there that I want to elaborate on. If you look at the list of Republican politicians who spoke to the assembled firearm enthusiasts, it wasn't exactly the A-team. Last year Mitt Romney showed up, but this year they had failed presidential candidate Rick Santorum, failed presidential candidate Rick Perry, universally disliked freshman senator Ted Cruz, currently unpopular Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, and former half-term governor and current punch line Sarah Palin. Every one of them would like to be president one day, but the only one with even the ghost of a chance is Jindal.

And what do they have in common? Some are has-beens, some have reached the pinnacle of their careers even if they don't know it yet, but what distinguishes them isn't just that they're very, very conservative. It's that—like the NRA itself—they're obviously convinced that they represent the majority of the American public, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.

When you're faced with apparent public disapproval of your position on something specific or even your broad ideological approach, there are a couple of ways you can address it....

Those are all household names, to one degree or another. On the other hand, who in the wide, wide world of sports is Paul Waldman?

72 million background checks since Obama came into office.

I will let the student do the math.

Just another shot in the current attack the left is using on gun control. They label the NRA as extremists while insisting they are only pursuing common sense gun control.

If they can convince America that gun owners are extremists then they hope to ban guns.

This is like the 1970’s again when the left really started banging away at gun control.

Men named Harlan Carter and Neal Knox came along dragging the NRA Golfers with guns along kicking and screaming and the gun rights movement was born.

They continue to pretend that Manchin/Toomey was a clean background check bill that was supported by 90% of Americans. The one poll they cite was taken long before Manchin/Toomey was crafted, and as always, the devil is in the details.

If a clean background check bill were to come along that included ironclad protections for privacy, it might get the support of a vast majority of Americans and sail through the Senate. But Manchin/Toomey was not that bill. Manchin/Toomey provided the foundation for universal registration, which is an idea opposed by a majority of Americans. The fact that a majority of Americans are happy with the way the gun control votes in the Senate worked out shows that they are well aware of the flaws in the proposed bill.

The problem with the gun rights position is that we are trying to prevent universal registration and the resultant ability of the government to confiscate firearms. But if you talk about preventing confiscation, people say you are being paranoid, and say “Nobody is coming to take your guns”. And that is very true... today. The problem is, when somebody does come to take our guns, it will be to late. The time to prevent that eventuality is now, by preventing the building of the databases that make confiscation possible.

So it is not really about confiscation, but rather about privacy. The individual has a right to privacy about what guns he owns and what he does with them, as long as he is not using them to commit crimes.

Senator Coburn has proposed a NICS background check system that the gun grabbers hate. Under this program, the gun buyer would run a NICS check on himself, and if he passes, he would be given a unique code number that could be used to purchase a gun within the next thirty days. When the buyer goes to purchase the gun, he would provide the code number to the seller, who would verify the code through NICS and process the sale, without having to give any information to the NICS system about what guns were purchased, how many, or indeed if any guns were purchased at all. This would prevent the creation of a national database that could be used to implement universal registration.

Such a system should satisfy the supposed 90% who support background checks but still preserve the privacy and rights of the gun-owner. But preseving the rights of the gun-owner is exactly what the gun grabbers want to avoid, so they oppose such a system.

Privacy is the peg on which we should hang our hats. Most Americans support privacy, and that number will increase over time, as people become more and more wary of a society that collects ever more extensive information about each of us.

Say “Confiscation”,
And they call you paranoid.
So say “Privacy”...

They’re not gun-grabbing democrats.

Nailed it.

The California legislature just stole 24 million that was supposed to be used for firearms owners to be used for firearm confiscations.

90% of liberals hate America and the Constitution. The other 10% pretend they love both when asked.

The problem with the gun rights position is that we are trying to prevent universal registration and the resultant ability of the government to confiscate firearms.

When this comes up on the various newspaper websites and the anti-gunners start poo-poohing this charge, I post THIS website, ask 'em to print out the out-of-date 2005 4473 form (they now further fragment "race" into "Hispanic" and "White Hispanic" (shades of Richardson!).

Next step is to fill it out and then come back and tell me that isn't the precursor to confiscation - you can't grab 'em 'til you know who has 'em and where they are.

Crickets.

I now carry a printed copy with me and am waiting for a face-to-face with the next anti, where I will ask him to fill out the form.

The truth is that the NRA is a lot of things, but "the middle of the river of America's mainstream" isn't one of them.

Oh. I get it. That probably explains why so few people have joined the NRA lately, and only small numbers have been buying guns and ammunition.

Excellent post.

Please understand that I’m not questioning your facts on Senator Coburn’s proposal, but do you have a link on this? You’ve made a very good point on the matter – one that highlights the gun grabbers true intentions.

This is something everyone interested in preserving freedom needs to learn.

See: Coburn Proposes Common Sense Universal Background Check System, Gun Controllers Hate It

Unless it can be used for confiscation, th gun grabbers do not want it. Their worst fear is that somebody will "solve" the universal background check problem without spinning off their precious, precious registration data.

Thank you for your response.

You are entirely correct – the Lying Leftist gun grabbers are pushing for the precursor to Confiscation with their Universal Registration measure while lying that it’s not for registration.

Unfortunately for the National Socialist Democrats, Schumer let the cat out of the bag when he promised universal background checks won’t create a gun registry and then says that his goal is “Universal Registration”

Schumer Promises Universal Background Checks Won’t Create A Gun Registry… Then Calls It “Universal Registration”…

On January 30, 2013, Sen. Chuck Schumer promised that universal background checks wouldn't create a gun registry. Yet just 13 days later, as Schumer was discussing gun control proposals, he stated, “the one which I've been pushing, which is universal registration.” It couldn't be any clearer — when a politician says “universal background checks,” what they actually mean is “universal registration.”

It should be clear to all that Confiscation is the ultimate goal, and the only way this can be attained is by Universal Registration as Schumer called it.

Just as Leftists cannot abide the truth, they cannot allow any type of ‘background check’ bill that does not lead to registration.

You know when a problem persists for years without anybody solving it, there is another agenda at work.

The “Gun Show Loophole” problem is meant to be solved in a way that results in universal gun registration.

The “Donut Hole” in Medicare drug coverage is meant to be solved in a way that results in state-run health care.

The Alternative Minimum Tax problem which is meant to be solved with higher taxes for all.

Yes, and what is truly maddening is that the Left’s oppressive governmental “Solutions” to said problems never solve anything and the folks who propose said “Solutions” are never held accountable for their failures.

The income tax was originally supposed to be just for the very rich – but as those taxes become more oppressive they have to load more of them on us.

Medicare and Medicaid were supposed to provide medical coverage but they are going broke and won’t be able to cover anyone once they collapse.

Universal Registration is supposed to….. well, the Lying Leftist gun grabbers have already admitted that they won’t solve the problem they are trying to address….. but they continue to push for them because as always the Leftists have something else in mind.
