This article sounds like a challenge, a dare, to the Republicans. There exist grounds for impeachment now, stronger than all three previous presidential impeachments (well, I’m including Mr. Nixon as close enough).

Introduce the Articles of Impeachment in the House of Representatives in a week or two, and push for a trial. Gear up for executive privilege hearings before the U.S. Supreme Court, in response to expected scores of disrespected subpoenas. Hire an Archibald Cox to set the record straight. And stick with fact and principle only, in order to make the case.

I remember those days.. I still wonder who it is out there who can name one thing Nixon did that JFK and LBJ didn't do. Except for the cover-up as explained below.. hint: NO ONE QUESTIONED the shenanigans of JFK and LBJ -- and lived in the case of LBJ.

Articles of Impeachments for Nixon (and the FReeper is right.. Nixon resigned after being informed by Goldwater, et al. that he was finished.)

Article 2 claimed that Nixon "endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner."

It's alleged that he schemed to use the IRS. Even if true he could not pull it off. At a minimum Clinton and Obama did do it.. and likely so did JFK and LBJ.

Nixon "misused the Federal Bureau of Investigation" as did both JFK and LBJ.

Nixon did investigate citizens "which unlawfully utilized the resources of the Central Intelligence Agency". For sure LBJ used the CIA to bug Goldwater's plane among a myriad other domestic tasks LBJ had the CIA personnel do. IMO.

Nixon "knew or had reason to know that his close subordinates endeavoured to impede and frustrate lawful inquiries by duly constituted executive, judicial and legislative entities concerning the unlawful entry into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, and the cover-up thereof. . ." That he did. JFK and LBJ didn't do that cover-up stuff because NOBODY SAID ANYTHING. They got away with the shenanigans. (Groups like the John Birch Society said something but in those days the only medium for them was periodicals with limited circulation.)

(As for the Watergate break-in why would Nixon care about what the DNC was thinking? He had a big lead and won in 1972 with 49 of the 50 states. The break in was done by underlings for whatever reason. Nixon tried to protect them.)

Yes Nixon interfered "with agencies of the executive branch, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Division, and the Office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force, of the Department of Justice, and the Central Intelligence Agency, in violation of his duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed." What president hasn't similar things?
