The Talk: What Did You Tell Your Kids After The Zimmerman Verdict?
NPR's Code Switch - Frontiers of Race, Culture and Ethnicity ^ | July 14, 2013 | Staff

Posted on 07/14/2013 2:57:29 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A few weeks ago, Levar Burton, the actor best-known for his role as Geordi LaForge in Star Trek and the host of the long-running kids' show Reading Rainbow, appeared on a CNN roundtable and offered up a sobering how-to on driving while black:

Listen, I'm going to be honest with you. This is a practice that I engage in whenever I am stopped by law enforcement and I've taught this to my son, who is now 33, as part of my duty as a father to ensure that he knows the kind of world in which he's growing up. I take my hat off and my sunglasses off, I put them on the passenger's side. I roll down my window, I take my hands and stick them outside the window and on the door of the driver's side because i want that officer to be as relaxed as he can be when he approaches my vehicle. And I do that because I live in America.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

It's a lesson that many of us got from out folks at some point, often before we got that other uncomfortable parent-child conversation about the birds and the bees. Don't move suddenly. Answer questions clearly, and with yes, sir and no, sir. Don't raise your voice. If you're handcuffed, don't say anything until we [your parents] get there....

NPR’s “Code Switch” forum kicks you out if you disagree or have a contrary opinion. Most all conservatives have been banned from posting there.

Don’t start trouble with anyone, as you never know how more prepared than you they are.

Lesson Trayvon sorely missed.

Dating my wife in Philly when a brawl started I told her, lets go the other way, as people get stupid and start punching/beating bystanders who
think this is open season to hurt anyone in the area.

When you go to ambush and beat a guy martial arts style, be sure he doesn’t have a gun on him.

A totally media fabricated event. People get shot all the time, and they decided to create an event out of this one.

I called my son and told him, “watch your six.”

So why do liberals think that advice doesn’t apply to every kid? I told my son the exact same thing. And it is good advice for anybody.

It sure is. Going to use this with my 21 year old who gets an attitude from time to time ...

I was born and raised in Philly, heck, I was just at the Phillies game today, my plan when something goes down? - run.

Getting out was always the best option., mostly so I didn't end up in the 15th and having to call my parents. Now that I have a family, I must defend them.

We all know about the animals in the city, so early this morning I went into Philly and picked my Mom up and brought her to my home- just to be safe.

Told my kids that an innocent man went free and a thug will not hurt anybody again.

I didn’t have to talk to my daughter — she posted to facebook in praise of the verdict, and even had an argument with one of her black friends about it. She is no conservative, but she still thinks solidly.

Don’t be distracted. The Federal government is going to use sleight of hand, to keep our attention focussed on riots and demonstrations like the ones in Oakland, San Francisco and elsewhere, to try and give Boehner and Cantor breathing room to force amnesty for illegal aliens down our throats. DON’T LET THEM DO THIS!!

Agree. It’s like a war zone at times. People looking for an excuse to harm someone, or property, including looting.

A shame, as it used to be a great city , with lots of friendly people, and neighbors.
