Aftermarket. www.44mag.com is the cheapest out there with quality products.

I get used military ones for less than $10. That is I would get them if mine hadn't fallen overboard in a tragic boating accident.

Any AR-15 standard mag should be compatible with your AR. However, not all are created equal from a quality standpoint. I would stick with MAGPUL mags as they are tops for quality and durability and they are quite inexpensive.

I should add, this sounds like your first AR. You’re going to want to stock up on cheap mags. I have a few ARs and probably 40 mags and I plan to buy more. The reason you want to stock up is in case the gun grabbers outlaw the 30 rounders. You basically want to have a lifetime supply.

The only ones that I’d suggest you stay away from are polymer mags. Bought some “on sale” and they suck - and I don’t mean “suck just a little” but suck on a magnitude of, well, picture a walrus trying to do a blowj- never mind... suffice to say, that’s how much they suck.

Brownell’s makes some really good 30 rounders.
Magpul’s are great too.
I also have some old Colt-marked 20 rounders which are great.

Built my AR. Oly lower, bushmaster upper. Got dozens of USGI mags with new springs and magpul followers. Got a bunch of magpul mags too. Save time and money, buy magpul mags. Great construction.

Look into:

Brownells and/or MidwayUSA.

Brownells has a 30-rd mag they have mfd (I don’t recall where) for about $10 when they go on sale.

Check into AR15.com as well as some of the other gun boards, you’ll find people selling gear cheap.

I’ve used many different brands and lately have been using Magpul 3d gen (with windows), can sometimes be found for about half of what you’re saying BM wants for them. Magpul makes great magazines.

Enjoy.

I have an Armalite AR-180 that I bought in the early ‘80s. M16/15 Mags fit it but they have the locking slits on the wrong side of the Mag and these Mags needed a good bit of alteration to work in my AR-180. I came across some Mags made in Israel that have locking slits on both sides and came with no tilt followers. The followers needed some minor alteration to the Bolt Hold Open tab, slight use of a Dremel tool on the tab was all I needed to make them work perfectly in my AR-180. I bought 10 30 round Israeli Mags and I am happy.

Green no-tilt followers were a USGI replacement that didn’t work well. Many aftermarket mag makers use the magpul followers which work much better.

Go with the Magpul! I have never seen one of those fail and I saw entire Battalions buy them prior to deployment. They are a quality product!

I hope your AR-15 was chambered for the 5.56 instead of the .223 since you never know when you’ll need that military caliber ammo.

Thanks for the info.
