Some of the most troll-like posters, especially within the last couple of years, have been accounts with early sign up dates like 1998. My guess is that a fair number of these are abandoned accounts for which the original owners didn't bother making any real sort of password.

So, for an account like, say, "misssmith", the password might have been "misssmith" or just "password" or something (a common thing in the earlier days of the internet, especially among the, ahem, older crowd). Anyone with even minimal scripting skills could gain access to a number of those accounts in a batch.
