The term is derogatory since it implies that the man wants to sleep with a particular woman. Women, on the other hand, are called ‘simps’ when they go all out for a man and their love is not reciprocated. The different meanings it holds based on gender are misogynistic and end up forming negative opinions. I believe this starts off with a backwards characterization of the whole concept.
Maybe I’ve been under a rock, but a man who shows sympathy is not a “simp” and a woman who experienced unrequited love is not a “simp”. Quite the opposite.
As I understand it, beta men who allow themselves to be slaves to women without the woman truly loving the man — that man is a simp.
I do not think I have ever heard the term applied to women.
This is an aspect of the concept that women tend to reject the “nice” guy (simp) and always go for the Bad Boy. Yes, after making that bad choice the woman may experience unrequited love (the Bad Boy is a “player”) but I don’t think the woman is termed a “simp”.

It would be a wonderful world if women chose their mates based on which guy is nicest and most considerate.
That’s not how things are. Men need to display alpha traits to attract the highest quality mates and maintain those traits throughout the relationship to keep it stable.

I always thought that “simp” was short for “simpleton”, which could apply to either case. I’ve never heard the term used in any of the contexts of this thread, though.

I had never before heard of “simp,” but my dictionary defines it as a slang term for simpleton.
