Skittles manufacturer is sued over claims candies contain poisonous colorant titanium dioxide which can damage vital organs and DNA

Skittles manufacturer Mars Inc. has been sued by a California woman who claims a colorant used in the candies is dangerous and puts people at risk of damage to their brains and DNA.

In a proposed class action filed on Thursday in the Oakland, California federal court, Jenile Thames accused Mars of endangering unsuspecting Skittles eaters by using 'heightened levels' of titanium dioxide, or TiO2, as a food additive.

The lawsuit highlighted how titanium dioxide will be banned in the European Union next month after a food safety regulator there deemed it unsafe because of 'genotoxicity,' or the ability to change DNA.

TiO2 - which is used as a colorant in Skittles - is also feared to have the ability to damage vital organs including the brain, if consumed in dangerous quantities.

It is generally used to provide a white or cloudy background on products.

Those foodstuffs can then be sprayed-over with the bright colors that Skittles - whose slogan is Taste the Rainbow - are famous for

According to the lawsuit, titanium dioxide is used in paint, adhesives, plastics and roofing materials, and can cause DNA, brain and organ damage, and well as lesions in the liver and kidneys.

'A reasonable consumer would expect that can be safely purchased and consumed as marketed and sold,' the complaint said. 'However, the products are not safe

Thames, of San Leandro, California, said she bought Skittles at a local QuikStop in April, and would not have done so had he known their contents.

He said checking the label would not have helped because the ingredients on Skittles' bright-red packages are hard to read

Titanium dioxide is the leas injurious thing in Skittles. It is nothing but artificially flavored sugar. Not exactly a nutritional food.

Not a problem. Just change the definition of “vaccine” to include Skittles.

"taste the rainbow" was a nice slogan before the "pride" crapola. Now it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

She bought ONE bag of Skittles and is worried about her health? She's nuts. You'd probably have to ingest POUNDS of TiO2 every day to get any adverse health effects. From Wiki -->

Possible carcinogenicity by ingestion

Ingested TiO2 has been identified as possibly carcinogenic. Bruno Le Maire, a minister in the Édouard Philippe French government, promised in March 2019 to remove it from alimentary uses and toothpaste. It was banned in France from 2020.

In 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ruled that as a consequence of new understandings of nanoparticles, titanium dioxide could "no longer be considered safe as a food additive", and the EU health commissioner announced plans to ban its use across the EU, with discussions beginning in June 2021. EFSA concluded that genotoxicity—which could lead to carcinogenic effects—could not be ruled out, and that a "safe level for daily intake of the food additive could not be established". In 2022, the UK Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland announced they disagreed with the EFSA ruling, and will therefore not follow the EU in banning titanium dioxide as a food additive. Health Canada has similarly reviewed the available evidence and decided not to change their position on titanium dioxide as a food additive at this time.

It's interesting that the USA is not mentioned.

People don’t have enough adversity in their lives, they go out and invent some. Titanium dioxide may or may not have mutagenic properties. This is only an assessment based on a very small sampling, and like all instances of where the general was argued from the specific, subject to a whole lot of speculative interpretation.

Never implicitly believe the current evaluation of science, because it is NEVER settled.

I have been keeping away from ingestible products using titanium dioxide for several years, but it's not something about which I've been super diligent.

Titanium dioxide is not helpful in any way and it is not something our bodies know how to handle, so it could be a problem at the cellular level.

It has been considered reasonably safe in the past and I've surely had plenty of it, over time.

Asbestos was considered a harmless thing too, but at least that wasn't meant to be ingested or breathed in, and it accomplished a very functional need for insulation from high temperatures.

All titanium dioxide is doing is coloring something I just ate, and I didn't need that color.

I am so tired of these type lawsuits.

I believe ANYTHING approved by the FDA should be exempt from these types of suits.

Ha ha oh wow, I haven’t seen that in decades. When I was a kid growing up in the 1970s there use to be this movie theater near us where if you went to the back of the building, you could sneak in through a fire escape which was busted. One of the first movies me and my friends ever snuck into was “Kentucky fried movie” I must have been around 11 or 12 and I was shocked by how “graphic” it was such as the “Catholic High school girls in trouble” skit, today though it seems totally innocent.
