I don’t know if any of you remember Bill Veeck, the baseball owner and pioneer? He had a wooden leg. My dad wrote his autobiographies and they were good friends. We would visit his family in Maryland on their estate. One of my earliest memories is sitting on his front porch when he removes his leg and uses it as an ashtray! I couldn’t be more than six years old at the time. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I sure do. I was a vendor at Comiskey Park (Sox Park) when he purchased the Chicago White Sox. He would sit in the grand stands with the fans and prop up his wooden leg on the seat back of the seat in front of him (The Sox were in the cellar and he wasn’t able to fill the park so there was plenty of places he could stretch out and relax). A great PR man and humanitarian. Quite a character.
