Human metapneumovirus, HMPV: Virus you've likely never heard of suddenly surges in Australia - with thousands feared to have it right now

A potentially deadly respiratory virus that few people even know exists is surging in Australia, with at least 1,168 people infected last week in NSW alone.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in all age groups, but it poses a greater danger to young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Though it usually causes a mild infection similar to the common cold - with nasal congestion, coughs, shortness of breath and a fever - complications can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia and can be fatal, especially among those who are immunocompromised, such as people with cancer.

According to NSW Health data, only flu, which was detected in 1,424 people, was more prevalent in the state than HMPV last week.

Confirmed cases of HMNPV have risen from 648 three weeks ago to 1,008 a fortnight ago, before reaching 1,168 infections last week.

The cases of HMPV - which are highest in winter and early spring - are also likely to be underestimated as testing is sometimes not done if a patient is already positive for Covid or flu.

I drink dyhrogen monoxide every day. About 12 cups worth.

It is probably a nothing virus if its common name was used instead.

Australia was a lot more compliant than I ever thought they’d be.

Not surprised if they will be again.

Yet another respiratory virus the media wishes to blow out of proportion so that they can bring back their heyday of endless fear porn.

Plenty of terrified people will demand masking up soon, I suppose...

It needs a catchier name if we’re to be afraid of it.

In other words, it's a cold.

Heck there are a lot of people catching something here in the states that leads to pneumonia. I think my wife & I are just getting over it. It is not fun at all.

All that is needed to declare a pandemic is mass distribution of cheap self-test kits which yield the desired rate of “positive” results.

Big Pharma will be happy to provide them, I’m sure.

It was running around here a few months ago and absolutely the worst illness I have had in my entire life.
3 weeks in bed.
Seniors and infants were dying from it at the hospital just north of us.

Forget covid. This baby almost took us out.

You drink dihydrogen monoxide? Oh my goodness! Thousands of people die from exposure to dihydrogen monoxide every year!

It should be BANNED! For the children, of course!

Yeah. I think it was prevalent here this past March. I had it. Not as bad as you, but I couldn’t shake the coughing for several weeks.

It makes sense that since it is Spring in Australia... Their September is our March.

In other words, it's a cold.

For most, yes. Since the Common Cold is not a virus, but a group of symptoms (most commonly caused by a number of rhinoviruses and coronaviruses). But for some small subset, like MarMema above, it advances to a more serious illness. Sounds a lot like COVID has been since early 2022 when Omicron took over.

Sorry to hear it, and hope you’re feeling better now. I had a really bad cold of some sort about 20 years ago, and it was no fun at all, though it didn’t last three weeks, thank heavens.

I just can’t help wondering how it is that some virus that’s been around forever, and has been so negligible that few have ever heard of it, is suddenly the next big killer.

That’s my point. It’s a cold, and some will unfortunately suffer worse illness than others, like any other cold. I’m sorry for those individuals, but I don’t see the need for general panic.

Wow, me too. Felt like crap for 3 or 4 days, but the cough stuck with me for almost a month. Much worse than when I had COVID, which was like a very mild cold that had pretty much zero impact on my normal activities.

You should be taking Vitamin D (>5,000IU/day):

(this is from 2014):

Vitamin D, Sunshine, Optimal Health: Putting it all Together

(this is from 2020):

Some researchers in Spain have reported an improvement to the HCQ treatment. Their "standard of care" includes HCQ. In a new study, 76 patients with Covid-19 were treated: 26 with "standard of care" and 50 with "standard of care" + a high dose Vitamin D analog (calcifediol ). For the group receiving calcifediol, only 1 (of 50) had to go to the ICU, and none died. For the group not receiving calcifediol, 13 (of 26) went to the ICU and 2 died.

Given the proven effectiveness of Vitamin D against respiratory infections in the past, one physician was appalled that the CDC had not already done a similar study. We can expect the bureaucrats to ignore this study.

The study:

“Effect of calcifediol treatment and best available therapy versus best available therapy on intensive care unit admission and mortality among patients hospitalized for COVID-19: A pilot randomized clinical study”

Here is an analysis of the study: Vitamin D, First clinical trial

Calcifediol raises blood levels of Vitamin D quickly. This is because it is the same as what the liver produces from regular vitamin D. Processing by the liver introduces days of delay, which might have been fatal for some of the Chinese Virus patients in this study. It is probably a good idea to get a prescription for Calcifediol and have some handy in case you develop Chinese Virus symptoms.
