Outrage in Italy as jeweller who shot dead two crooks who tied up his daughter and robbed his store is jailed for 17 years

A jeweller in Italy has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for shooting dead two crooks who robbed his store and tied up his daughter, prompting a fierce debate on the limits of self-defence.

Mario Roggero shot at three thieves in Grinzane Cavour on April 28, 2021 after they entered his store, bound his daughter's hands behind her back, threatened to kill his wife and helped themselves to expensive jewellery and watches.

Fearing for his life, Roggero was seen on CCTV chasing them out of the shop and shooting at least five times.

Andrea Spinelli and Giuseppe Mazzarino died a few yards from the shop entrance, one in the street and the other on the corner with a side street. A third robber was injured and later arrested.

Roggero's sentencing has sparked outrage in Italy as politicians weigh in and say the jeweller was only defending himself and his family.

'He worked hard all his life, and he was just trying to defend his family and his business,' Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said, expressing his 'full solidarity'.

But prosecutors have argued in court that following the crooks outside before shooting them as they got into a car is tantamount to an 'execution'.

A man, who appears to be Roggero, is held at gunpoint as he is moved through the store and into a back room.

'They were counting: five, four, three… I thought I was going to die,' Roggero later told the Italian press.

The men filled sacks with goods before making their escape outside.

Footage from the car park then shows Roggero pulling a gun on the thieves and shooting at them as they run.

One was later found dead in the middle of the street, another on a nearby corner.

Exactly why the Mafia rule of your town is a better option than the state.

Can’t (legally) shoot them if they’re fleeing. Unfortunate, but that’s the law. I would have thought in this case there may not have been any witnesses. I certainly wouldn’t have seen anything.

How did the first Mafia start? The 'mafia' is generally thought of as an Italian secret crime society, but the origins of the Mafia start way before the onset of automatic guns and cocaine. The Mafia began as a way of life: a way to protect one's family and loved ones from the injustice of the government.

Yep. The video clearly shows the jeweler shooting at someone who was running away from him. But you never know. Maybe the thief had turned towards the jeweler a split second earlier, with a gun in his hand.

Perhaps one moral of the story is this. The government will be slow to protect a citizen, but quick to persecute him. So if you don’t need to take a chance, don’t.

The Mafia owed its origins and drew its members from the many small private armies, or mafie, that were hired by absentee landlords to protect their landed estates from bandits in the lawless conditions that prevailed over much of Sicily through the centuries.

So a vacuum of justice and responsibility brings something better, even if it’s Mafioso style order....

It sounds like they had the CCTV footage from the stores own security system.

They should have destroyed the tapes or computers prior to the police taking it.
Better to convicted of destroying evidence, then convicted of murder/man slaughter.

The reason 911 took place is that the government had instructed airlines to teach their crews to simply give up to hijackers. This was to avoid anyone getting hurt. Because it’s the government’s role to stop people from getting hurt. Anyone who fought hijackers could expect to be punished regardless of whether he stopped a hijacking or not. This is the same kind of thinking. No one would be hurt if the jeweler simply handed over the money. Defending mere property by killing someone would be a worse crime than just losing the property.

The thing is the right to property and to protect your property is the actual essence of civilization. If you don’t have property rights, you can’t have civilization. This is why the blue cities are dying.
