A Vietnamese restaurant that slaughtered up to 300 cats a month for a stomach-churning soup recipe has closed its doors this month after the owner voiced his moral concerns with the practice. Pham Quoc Doanh, 37, dramatically tore down the sign that advertised cat meat — known as ”thịt mèo” — outside his Gia Bảo restaurant in the Thịnh Đán ward of Thái Nguyên in early December, the Humane Society International (HSI) announced.
As a result, 20 cats and kittens set to be drowned in order to meet the eatery’s demand were freed and placed for local adoption, the organization said. Doanh never wanted to sell cat meat — which is a relatively popular dish in Vietnam — but was pushed into the market in order to feed his family, he told Metro.
“Before selling cat meat at this restaurant I served other normal food and drinks. However, the income was not enough to cover the living cost of my family,” the father of two explained. “It was then I tried selling cat meat since there was no other available restaurant serving this in the area,” he said. Polls show that 87% of people in Vietnam have had a pet mysteriously stolen, or know someone whose pet was taken, it added.

No surprise to anyone who worked with the boat people during the 80’s resettlement effort.
I don’t really care what they do over there. I liked it better when we were individual countries w/ different cultures, not some dumbass liberal world union.
Don’t try that w/ the cats here though.

it’s funny joke but technically Chinese people avoid cats and prefer dogs.
cats don’t have enough meat so it is too much work as oppose to dogs. cats also supposedly tastes sour
cats are also harder to catch, a dog may be easier to be lead into the back of the chinese/viet/african/California wild game restaurants.
perhaps maincoon would have more meat? or Norwegian forest cats?
I have no problems with people eating cat.
However, I wouldn’t do it.
God gave us dominion over animals and none are off limits for eating.
Wonder if the Chinese ever considered Pit Bulldogs for cuisine? Lots of lean meat, but may be as with Buffalo meat, requiring long, long boiling times.
The restaurant’s owner is devastated.
They say he is catatonic.
Including humans?
“They say he is catatonic.”
Well, someone’s gotta say it!
I live in Papua, Indonesia. It is our habit to keep our dogs very close in the days for holidays and we always have them sleep inside the house for their safety.
We’ve only lost one. That dang dog was an escape artist. Cost him his life.
SPJNK.
The space is being taken over by a German restaurant, specializing in artisanal sausage. It’s called “Johnny Verbeck’s”.
