Did anyone notice the abundance of rats?
The fish and game head out here in CA got canned for eating cougar while on a trip to Montana. People here whined and bitched about it…
My Grandfather related to me how an officer in their camp had managed to hang on to a yappy small dog for quite some time until one day the guy manning the rice preparation kettle scooped it up as it was running by with the big stirring paddle right into the boiling water. The owner unknowingly ate some too. Harsh, but the small addition of protein might have been the feather of nutrition that got someone to the eventual finish line of survival otherwise. Granddad was 84 pounds at liberation…

Since you brought up God and dominion,
Cat or dog is forbidden to eat according to the Bible. I think it’s mentioned in either Leviticus or Deuteronomy.
But if you leave out Western notions, then orientals eat just about everything.
