Houmatt's Person of The Year 2004

Fortunately I did not have to think too hard about this one. It's just that some of you may be surprised by my choice, as it is someone you may not expect....

It all started on June 2, 2004. A software engineer from Salt Lake City named Ken Jennings became the new Jeopardy! champion. He would defend this title 74 consecutive times, only to be defeated on the episode that aired on November 30.

At first, when he began his run, Ken was just an okay guy to me. That turned into frustration as he continued to win, and I desired a new face in the champion's spot at the podium. But as he stayed, I found him to have a sense of humor, a gracious attitude and style reminiscient of my fave Jeopardy! contestant and champion, Bob Verini. Then I heard him mention his intent to donate 10 percent of his winnings to his church, confirming his devotion to the Mormon faith.

I have to say, it was sad to see him go. But, at least we have a lecture tour and book to look forward to in 2005. And just recently it was announced he is going to be the spokesman for Microsoft's Encarta. So perhaps a few TV ads won't be too far away.

In a year of elections and war, Ken Jennings provided a much needed change of pace; a welcome relief. To this I say: Thank you, Ken.
