So here they are: The Reasons for Children of the 80s to Feel Old

______________________________________________________

*While reading reviews about the "Live Aid" DVD on Amazon, I read a comment from a teenager that wrote that it's an ideal gift for his/her parents. And knowing that Live Aid was from 1985.

*Because when I mentioned Hall & Oates to my cousin who is 20 he had NO clue as to who I was talking about. Becauase Bon Jovi, who just came out with "Runnaway" like YESTERDAY -- right? (not) is now over 20 yrs old and considered "Classic." Because "Do They Know it is Christmas" is now 20 yrs old..........................................

Ah yes. AC goes New Wave. LOL. I can't even say I don't like the album, although it isn't anywhere near the top of my list.

I was born in '67. Was SO DAMN THANKFUL when the 70s ended. I remember people burning disco albums : DISCO IS DEAD! LONG LIVE NEW WAVE!! Time for MY fav 80s memories :

Favorite Television Shows :

I SO wanted to be Laura!!!

Just got through watching an episode of Magnum PI this morning! My sophomore history teacher had a huge poster of Tom Selleck in her classroom, which we girls loved.

Just found this about the Simon&Simon show whilst looking for pictures

MOONLIGHTING...how could anyone forget THAT show!? I LOVED that show.

And of course I loved Family Ties. How could I not...practically my whole class could have been Alex P. Keaton!! With a few Mallorys thrown in.

The Golden Girls

Designing Women

My favorite bands :

I was NUTS about Men At Work. No one understood it. I thought they were fun. And that's all I wanted to care about in the 80s : music that was fun...not sexual, not dark politics, not anything but fun.

Cyndi Lauper. SO unusual! Daughter loves the Goonies, which Lauper did the theme song for. Ran around with friends when a junior in HS...whenever we heard "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" song on the radio, we'd find the nearest parking lot, turn up the radio, and dance like maniacs around the car. Silly teenagers?? you betcha. But it was FUN!

I couldn't get into Adam Ant at the time, but he holds a fond place in my heart now for the memories of a friend who absolutely adored him. Pictures of him warred for space with whatever pictures of Harrison Ford we could find.
Oh you know what...I cant even begin to describe all the musicians that I loved. Duran Duran was definitely one of them, but I also liked the Eurythmics, the Cure, Madness, the Cars, Huey Lewis...so many others. HATED MADONNA, THE SKANK. Liked Thriller, but not necessarily Michael Jackson himself. I liked his work prior to Thriller, but I considered it more 70s than 80s. Heck, I remember him when he was part of the Jackson Five!

Favorite Movies :

SAVE FERRIS!!!

I drooled over Andrew McCarthy. LOVED Breakfast Club, because it SO described life in my high school. Pretty in Pink is my fav of the Hughes films.

Okay, guys, how many of you GenReaganites remember watching CAROL BURNETT?!?! Not a huge 80s presence like in the 70s, to be sure, but man I loved watching her reruns!! My dram teacher in high school always ended whatever our UIL competition and the school year with "Im so glad we had this time together...!"

a good 80s site

Quite interesting how those who liked pop music and those who liked rock always seem to agree on the 'The Cars'.

Welcome. This isn't a vanity, BTW. It's an article on US culture. A vanity would be posting a thread where you just bitch and moan about being old.

Do you remember the MCI followup? Evidently AT&T didn't pay those actors to keep from doing more commercials for MCI, so MCI shot with the EXACT SAME grandma and grandpa, and started with the same feel, grandma crying and saying "Sonny [or whoever it was] called today..." grandpa asking "But why are you crying?" Then grandma yells,

"HAVE YOU SEEN THE BILL!?!?!?!"

Oh fer sure, dude! I liked them a lot. That both rockers and bubblegum people both liked them is a mark of their talent.

The one that got me was the second remark that mentions that awful song "Do They Know It's Christmas". That is exactly 20 years old this month. On the Cashbox top 100 chart for '84, it shows it debuted on 12/22/84. Yikes!!!!!

I know, back then I was an 18 year old senior in high school. My 20th reunion is this year, dang, time flies.

But how long has it been since "Hands across America"? I cannot even remember what that was supposed to raise our consciousness about, it obviously didn't work.

1986, "Hands Across America" was about helping the homeless. I know someone elsem ight have responded but I haven't rad down the list so I will not prejudice my replies. BTW, I have one of my eight cats on my lap as I type this, speaking of the 1980's, I had her since 1989 and I have another one I have since 1987. B-)

I love the people who were born in the 80s complaining about feeling old. Too funny! I was born in '66 and still don't feel old!

I was born in 1966 too. B-) Yeah, I think some of this is tongue in cheek, but actually when you compare us to the kids in college today, we have seen a lot, 3 Popes, the fall of Communism, two Gulf Wars and 9-11. When I talk about the Cold War to some "yung uns," they look at me like I'm an old geezer. B-) Well, it pays to be prepared so if anyone wants to have a duel of walkers at 10 paces, I'm ready. B-D Man, I'm ready for some ELO. B-)

All I remember is The Ramones' parody video of it for their song "Something to Believe In"

Don't forget "Father Christmas" by the Kinks, it came out in 1984/85 I think. Hmmm, that reminds me, "Footloose" is 20 years old. B-)

Anybody remember "Video Jukebox" on HBO and "Night Flight" on USA Nwtwork. I vaguely remember a short, I think it was on "Night Flight" called "Jack Mack and Radboy." I swear that's where Michael Judge goes his inspiration for "Beavis I Butt-Head."

Dad thought that color TV was a fad; we didn't get one until 1977!!

Heh, we got our first color TV in 1971, a 23" Zenith Boyden model, made in late 1970 I think. I still have it. Our "new" color TV is a 1982 Zenith 25" and is our current TV which I'm watching now. I saw lots of history on the TV from Ronald Reagan's "Evil Empire" and "Star Wars" speech to 9-11, President Bush's "Evil Axis" speech and the two Gulf Wars along with the current Tsunami event.
