-Great Rant!-
I was just thinking the same thing this morning watching media coverage of our assets in the disaster region.
Our aircraft carriers are floating cities. Each one has more resources than many third world countries.
When it comes to the real "heavy lifting", where is the rest of the "world community"?
Only resources from the United States can get to the problem area and make a real difference in real time to actually save some lives and mitigate the disaster.
I never bought into the "send cash" mania this and other disasters always spawns.
What good does "cash" do when trained people, supplies, communications and transportation are what is -really- needed?
If the affected areas actually -had- the physical resource's, what good does the cash do? Hand and injured, starving and homeless person $50.00 US each? No, they need the "stuff" only we can provide on a timely basis.
Remember the "Food for Oil" scandal? All the UN and some of these third world tinpot dictatorships want, is our money for the ruling elite class.
We send food, water, doctors, shelter and medicine via our armed forces, and they get mad about it?
Think about it......

Thanks for posting. Had I not read this thread, I would never have known the story of Gail Halvorsen, and what a hero he was.
My friend Billy (James William) Lunsford gave his life in Vietnam when attempting to give candy to a begging Vietnamese child, and he stepped on a landmine. The story of Gail Halvorsen reminded me of him.
