Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Arlen Specter went back on his word to Republican caucus members and conservative groups alike when he recently hired Hannibal G. Williams II Kemerer, who until recently was the NAACP's assistant general counsel. Specter hired Kemerer against the wishes of his senior Judiciary Committee staff. "We warned him this was going to cause trouble, but Specter said it was his committee, we are his staff, and he's going to do what he believes is right," says a Judiciary Committee staffer.

Kemerer was a protégé of Elaine Jones, who three years ago, as head of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, lobbied Sen. Ted Kennedy to delay confirmation of many of President Bush's judicial nominees to a federal circuit court where her group had pending litigation. When Jones and Kennedy's deal was revealed, she was forced to resign.

Specter hired Kemerer to deal specifically with the nominations and vetting of federal judicial nominees, a position many conservatives were led to believe by Specter would go, at the very least, to a Republican

You are confused. Senator Frist hasn't betrayed anyone. He'll take Specter out if Specter proves the lone obstacle.

If anything, this is a case of guilt by association. OK, Kemerer worked for someone at the NAACP who was forced to resign for unethically lobbying for obstruction of judicial nominations to courts where the NAACP had pending cases. What has Kemerer done to incur anyone's wrath?

I don't trust Specter any further than I can spit into a stiff wind, but let's not get hysterical until we actually have a case to make.

Don't waste your firepower on some gofer lawyer being hired - send Bush's old nominees back through committee and if any does not clear immediately and get a heads up or down in the Senate, then chop Spector's nuts off, then his legs, etc.

I can't stand some of these old crap pants types like Spector. They have been in Washington so long they have no concept that they represent anyone other than themselves.

As far as I know, there is no way for Senator Frist acting alone to remove Senator Specter as chairman; the only way at this point would be for the full Senate to act.

all the R's in the Senate are a bunch of RINO's, IMHO. That legislative body on our side of the aisle has needed a good house cleaning for many years.

When an OLD KKK leader like Sheets Byrd and a narcissis like Plugs Byden can hold up nominations and we do not have the nuts to shut them up with the majority we have - something is wrong.
