I'm not one to attatch hyperbole to that stuff but the song is truly haunting. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

Another "Yes" vote... definitely worth watching.

You think so?

Having been in that type of situation, I have to say the special effects took me back to a place I didn't want to go, so I thought they were pretty good. I could smell the cordite and hear the screams.

Hollywood has a tendency to under-develop characters in many instances, or to make them larger than life to emphasize a point, so I won't agree or disagree on that point.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket was as good a military movie as I have ever seen, but the second half sucked so bad, the overall rating gets no more than a C.

I've got the movie on DVD, I have to agree, the anti-war theme was a bit too much. "Animal Mother" was my favorite character as well. LOL

That was an incredible performance. I didn't know it was off the cuff. Pretty amazing. I watched the movie with my dad who was in the Marines in the 1960s, and he thought the basic training part of the movie was pretty realistic.

I'd not confuse/equate special effects with quality.

The story is true, the characters real, the emotions draining.

Besides, I think the special effects were rather good. For example, I've seen close air support air strikes up close and it is something to behold, and I have called in those air strikes (ground Forward Air Controller, Gulf War I), and I tell you the greatest fear was what happened in that battle. Made me shiver.

Just me talking. I'm no trendy Hollywood movie reviewer. . .just a guy that knows what he likes.

Cheers.

Put another vote in the YES! column.

Aloha Ronnie was there. He's already been pinged.

If I remember correctly, he gave it high marks too.

I don't know whether it was technically or graphicly correct, but I did like that it portrayed the awesome courage of our soldiers in an absolutely horrible situation and how they prevailed, despite the odds against them.

I've got a friend in the Marines, and he's told me that it's pretty different nowadays with respect to the Drill Sargeants, but the camraderie among the enlisted is pretty much the same.

The story was great. Mel Gibson didn't pull off the Southern Officer as well as I would have hoped. Sargeant Major Basil Plumley (Sam Elliot) was fantastic. Snake Sh*t (Greg Kinnear) was good too.

Greg Kinnear is one of those guys you would never expect to pull off a role like that. Rick Shcroder in The Lost Battalion was another suprisingly good performance.

It's a marvelous film chock-a-block full of everything Hollywood and the left hate:

Beyond being wonderfully and unashamedly pro Faith, family and sense of duty, just to piss off the radical feminists, it manages to also be one of the most pro fathers flicks ever to come out of Hollywood!

It's got a fair bit of graphic violence - where necessary to tell the story - but it's never gratuitous or used for shock value as was the case with Saving Private Ryan which Hollywood loved because, in truth, it's essentially an anti war movie with very little plot other than the gory battle scenes.

All in all: a must see!
