What is your opinion of the SKS?

Overall I LIKE the Yugo M59/66. But there are things to be aware of.

For one, these are NOT the Chicom (Norinco) SKSs. Generally, they are of a much higher quality. Some would argue about this, but it's a fact. It doesn't matter much except that the vast majority of SKSs floating around this country are Chinese. So a great many of the parts made for SKSs don't fit the Yugos well. They either just DON'T fit, or require "fitting". We discovered this when we bought a couple of replacement magazines. I gave them to a buddy of mine with a Norinco, and it worked like a charm. :-) Ditto for the front sight adjustment tool. I had to take a file to it to make it work with the Yugos. It didn't bother me since it was a $4.00 part from Tapco.

Also...from a functional standpoint, there aren't a lot of good options from the standpoint of upgrades. For example...I would REALLY like to have electronic optical sights (LED red dot, or tritium). The only decent mounting systems I can find are one made by D.C Engineering, but it's $85.00 (on a $200.00 rifle?!), and the other is a "drill and tap" operation. The D.C. Engineering solution is a receiver cover replacement that will cause you to need special tools for field stripping and cleaning.

I WANT IT ALL...and by this I mean, I would like an optical sight, in ADDITION to open iron sights, without sacrificing ANYTHING...including the ability to field strip as it was intended!

Now...having said that, understand that I'm a PURIST who wants it all. I realize that I seldom get exactly what I want.

So I'd have to say that it's a VERY GOOD rifle for the price and functionality it provides. It's simple to operate, holds 10 rounds, but you can get higher cap mags. Sights are VERY basic. It's not excessively loud if you MUST fire it without "ears" on.

We've gotten BETTER than MOA accuracy out of ours at 200 yards depending on the ammo you use. Which from what I've been told is VERY good for the SKS.

One of the best things about the SKS is that you can buy 7.62x39 ammo from The Sportsman's Guide for "about" $60.00/thousand.

I've been telling everybody I know to BUY TWO OF THEM NOW!.

Yeah...thumbs up from me. It's a ood, solid, simple, reliable semi auto for "about" $200.00.

the next aftermarket doohicky of note that I shall add will be an Eotech sight.

Oh hey! Take note! :-) You might know this...but one of the Eotechs...I "think" the 550-E? ...could have the model # a little off... but it's NV compatible. IOW, if you put it in front of your NV sighting system, you can "see" the sight. It's not much more in price than the lesser model.

So if you have any plans at all to put NV equip on your weapon, be sure to get NV compatible sights. Eotech makes one, and AimPoint makes one called the Comp-ML.

Stay away from ATN sights and NV equip. It's JUNK. :-)

yes. actually, it was IN the bullpup kit when I bought it. whoever installed it screwed the pooch, bigtime, so I was able to get the whole shebang for $300 total (did some research - that's less than the cost of the kit, and the gun itself is about twice that, so i got it for a steal)

It took me about an hour of puzzling, about four bucks at a hardware store, and less than ten minutes of labor to fix the screwup (and, as a side-project, add a trigger-pull adjustment mechanism to the wire trigger-extension)

been refining it ever since

It spits brass up to 45 feet in a 30degree arc, so I had to build a brass-catcher out of sheet aluminum and fiberglas... and having a brass-catcher blocking the bolt-carrier handle necessitated making a forward-mounted charging handle... it just keeps going.

Yep...that's an AK...tossing brass farther than you or I could throw it!

Ya know...I never could understand this...but our ARs drop brass behind the shooter, sometimes into the face of your shooting buddy (we practice CQB drills). But the SKSs, and the FAL we have throw brass FORWARD of the ejection port! So the worse that's going to happen is that you thump your buddy in the back somewhere!

BTW - I got whacked by a 7.62 empty casing at a range years ago...WHACK!...right in the side of the head! It HURT. We talked the guy with the AK into moving to the far right. :-)

That's a good deal you got on the weapon. Nice job too!

Bushmaster IIRC makes some good SKS add-ons, and there are good re-stocking kit options available.

there is even, last time I checked, a bullpup kit (though I've never laid hands on one, so I'll not vouch for its quality)

the P90 is a very small bore centerfire rifle. 5.7mm IIRC, with a smaller case max-dia than the 5.56mm/.223

Good point, but I've seen AirSoft guns that you could NOT tell from the real thing.... case in point, here's my paintball gun. With the low profile hopper, it's difficult to tell from an M-4. :-) I put the 200 rd hopper back on it because "fashion" loses it's appeal after the first couple of times of being "scourched" by teenagers on the opposing team. :-)

ZOT!

I've got that problem with my Witness 10mm. Need a different recoil spring so it will stop tossing my spent brass into the next county. I'd use a "wrist strap" style catcher, but I'm left handed.

Oh there are LOTS of add-ons that are really good! ...and you are CORRECT. Bushmaster makes VERY high quality add-ons. My main disappointment with the SKS is that I couldn't have open sights AND illuminated (electronic, or tritium) sights without sacrificing some other funcationality. The best solution I saw is a "over the top" mount that you have to drill and tap the left side of the receiver for. I'm probably going to do this with my son's SKS because he's gotten spoiled using our other "equipment", all of which has electronic sights, and or decent 650nm lasers, and lights.

Yeah...I saw that SKS bullpup kit. I thought it was a strange looking thing though! :-)

In ATN's defense...reportedly they have EXCELLENT customer service! But I'd rather pay more money for a higher quality product that doesn't break easily! Not only this, but if the SHTF in a big way, will ATN's customer service even be there? :-)

VERY cool!...and such a happy shooter too! :-) My wife's Armalite A-2 was rigged up like that for awhile, but she complained that it was HEAVY! AG! Heavy?!

Alas...she's my sweetie though, and her weapon of choice MUST be useable, so I planted a C-More Railway on top of the carrying handle and she's happy with it now.

Ah yes...here's a photo of it...sitting next to ME! Right here...
Pop!

Get this...I had also put a First Samco quad-rail mount system on it, and vertical grip. She didn't like that either because of weight! So I gave it to this fine young man (my 10 yr old) and we installed it on his AR! He likes it just FINE! :-)

ZOT!

Notice the "stubby" stock. :-)

I'm passingly familiar with several Airsoft models of the P90.
Most of them have opaque magazines.
The only one that I know of that has a full-simulation magazine (dummy rounds visible) (by Tokyo Marui) has a full mag with no stack variance at the feeding end.
If you look closely, you will see the double-stack vary into feeding file in the image in question.
If that is a model, it is a DAMN slick one.

. It gives one "about" 2.5 seconds to decide friend or foe while the person on the receiving end recovers from the disorientation it causes in low light. :-)

I hope I can yell "I am a FReeper" inside of 2.5 seconds!!! ;)

A stronger recoil spring "might" help. My Colt Series 80 .45 ACP was bad about chucking empties 15 feet behind me to the right. I replaced the recoil spring with a 22 or 23lb spring and now it drops them all in a nice little pile right behind my right foot.

Wilson makes spring sets I "think". I'm pretty sure I brought mine from Brownells...http://www.brownells.com....or Midway Arms...http://www.midwayusa.com.

They came in a set...recoil spring...firing pin spring...and main (hammer) spring. I put the recoil and firing pin spring, but haven't gotten around to replacing the hammer spring "yet". It's a slight PITA without the right tools. :-)

It's the most fun I've had in a long time! It's a Tippmann A-5 with all the add-ons to dress it up to look like an M-4. It's a FRIGHTFUL paintball gun too! It's very accurate, and I do very well with it!

I'll have to warn you though....I don't know how old you are...I'm 41 and I started playing back in May with a bunch of teenagers, and few guys my age, and a few in their 30s. It's a ROUGH sport!

But if you're like me and never quite grew up, and still think you'd like to play "war games", MILSIM paintball is about the closest you can get. The guns are a little pricey though. That A-5 of mine was right at the $400.00 mark and I pulled off some tricks to save about $100.00.

It's a really cool paintball gun though. I like it. :-)
