As George Will notes this week, the Left is surging ahead with its plans to silence conservative blogs and websites (such as Free Republic). We scoffed when the McCain-Feingold atrocity was first proposed, winced when it was passed by Congress, and screamed when the president signed it, dodging responsibility for it under the asumption that SCOTUS would judge it unconstitutional. Unless something changes, all blogs and websites will be prohibited from any political content during the run-up to an election. Of course, the Dinosaur Media will be exempted from such controls, so we will be bathed in their lies and treason during the months before an election.
This is going to happen before 2008 unless something changes. My senators -- the loathsome Kerry and Kennedy -- and my congressman -- Neal -- believe that the US should be under communist rule, with the press controlled by them and their minions. They make no bones about it. No help there.
We all scream and bitch about such schemes, but this one has to be stopped somehow. As of this moment, I don't see that happening.
Gulp!
To exit from my Ping list, just send me one request to that effect, public or private.
It's possible that FR is the best suited to be such a test case, being financed at a higher level than mere blogs.

"The problem facing the FEC is that McCain-Feingold broadly restricts coordination with, and contributions to, political candidates. So what is the agency to do with all those people who use their Web sites to praise a candidate? Computers and Web access cost money, which could be construed as a financial contribution to a campaign. Ditto bloggers who link to politicians' Web sites, or any individual who forwards a candidate's press release to a list of buddies. All this is to say nothing of blogs that are affiliated with political campaigns and coordinate their activities."
The internet and talk radio are the last lines of defense against the left so we knew they would be coming after us. We must fight back as hard as we can. I am sure all my reps are against it but I will notify them and the local MSM about my opposition.
Wonder how they are going to do that?
If enough bloggers simply ignore it, it will go away. 'Enough' may be a big number, though.
Just keep doing what we do and let the government come at us.
It looks like the TRUTH is hurting the left!!
"Unless something changes, all blogs and websites will be prohibited from any political content during the run-up to an election."
Make my day.
What if the servers my blog is on are physicly in some Carribian country? No US agency will have the jurisdiction to shut them down.
Kinda sad though, that I would have to leave my country to express my freedom of speech.
This Bill ought to be called the "Dan Rather Protection Act." No one would have been able to reveal his lie with this bill.
I don't have a blog, but we all need to get one to defy this unconstitutional law.

I believe free speech is terminated if this stands. Frankly, the fact that this passed---a Rep. House, Senate & Pres.---indicates things are much worse than I thought.
I hardly know what to say at the moment, but if we cannot even generate interest for a fight to repeal this bill (and so far, I see virtually nothing---even on Free Republic), I cannot see how freedom can be retained.
I wish we could get 1/100th the support of Intelligent Design or 1/10,000 of the support for Right to Life.

Not for long!
"Just keep doing what we do and let the government come at us."
Sure we can take them. Got your automatic rifle ready?
Simple.
