Today many groups got out and protested HR 4437. At least that is what I though they were doing. In fact it was a combination of people demanding no consequences against illegal immigrants who broke the law and Palestinians yelling about Israel. Apparently the two were linked.
I found it ironic that the protestors denounced walls and stopping the flow of people while blocking most of Sather Gate. They also blocked the signs of those in the crowd who disagreed with them. Members of the Conservative Activist League(CAL) and the Berkeley College Republicans, who were not disrupting the speakers, found protestors holding their signs and banners in front of theirs. Apparently they want all voices to be heard, except for those who disagree with them.
All the poor photographer wanted to do was get a picture. However the different ideas of some in the crowd had to be censored by a Mexican flag.
My main problem with the demonstrators is they want to be their own nationalistic people first and also receive the benefits of United States citizenship. I would ask them to review the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America.
I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.
The spirit I got from the protestors was an imperialistic desire to overpower the United States. The protests were not people following the first amendment as Americans, but groups demanding privileges as people who identified themselves as different nationalities.
How many different flags can you count? The Palestine and Mexican flags were well represented while there was only one person with Old Glory.
As far as being allowed into the country, it is a privilege not a right. People wait in line legally to enter the US and to become naturalized US citizens. If you want to cut in front of those who are already waiting your mother never taught you about fairness.
The United States, as well as any functioning country, is governed by the rule of law. If you dont like the law, vote and lobby Congress. If you want to whine all day, go back to whatever country you can from.
Guess these folks weren't on message about the US flag. Excepting the gay rainbow stripes version, and us BCR counterprotesters, there was only one, vastly outnumbered by the Pally, Mexican, and flags from every nation south of the Rio Grande.
Here are some pics:
I can see that it degenerated into a mixed issues antiwar and anti-America/Pro communism rally.
I can't say that it degenerated at all. It was at that degenerate point from the outset.
GREAT pictures. Way to go.
God, how I love America!
Berkeley is a real trip. I remember during the free speech movement. If anyones free speech was not on message with the radicals, they were shouted down. No free speech for those that did not parrot the party line.
What a place. Very pathetic in retrospect.
Even the Gaynited States flag, too! We're beat!
Most of the Latinos I know [especially foreign born] dont cop to the standard Liberal pillars of faith: Abortion and homosexuales seem to fare especially poorly in their culture.
Funny how THE MEDIA won't show mexican flags now, but they are still flying at demonstrations, eh?
