Big boycott - or will it be a big backlash?

There will be 2 to 3 million people hitting the streets in Los Angeles alone. We're going to close down Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Tucson, Fresno, Phoenix." So says Jorge Rodriguez, a union official who helped organize big rallies earlier this spring to support illegal immigrants.

He and the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants had best hope he's wrong. Disrupting life for millions of American citizens just trying to get to work and go about their business will not bring sympathy to their cause. It will have the exact opposite effect.

A backlash by citizens who never really gave illegal immigration that much thought before has already begun. It began with the waving of Mexican flags and the walkout of students from Los Angeles schools a few weeks ago.

The Senate was going to offer a less harsh version than the House, even if not one single person took to the streets waving a Mexican flag.

Others who supported the earlier big rallies backed off the boycott when they smelled backlash in the air. In a rare moment of lucidity, Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony called on kids to remain in school. Other organizers pointed out that workers could lose their jobs for unexcused absences. As well they should.

What do the organizers want? "We want full amnesty, full legalization for anybody who is here (illegally)," said Jorge Rodriguez, the union leader vowing to shut down Los Angeles.

Organizers of today's boycott are encouraging people not to buy things today. We encourage you to shop till you drop. Go out to lunch. Pick up that book you've been wanting for a while. Fill up your gas tank.

Hey, if that last one doesn't defeat an economic boycott, nothing will.

These demonstrations will not sway public opinion one way or the other; they just hardened the battle lines.

There is a big block of new voters up for grabs among the Latino community. Calling US citizens 'anchor babies' or criminalizing their parents will probably not help the Republican party.

Except the book, I'm doing all of these things today.

I think they are only hurting themselves and this will only become an awareness to the American people (and hopefully soon, the government) that these people are disruptive to our society. They aren't here to better their lives and earn a decent living. No, they are here to demand entitlements and live off of hard working LEGAL american citizens. Their arrogance shows that they have NO RESPECT for what TRUE AMERICA stands for!!!

A boycott and protests pissing people off? Naah, leftists never think that far ahead. Protesting and boycotting are ingrained instincts for them: it's how they attempt to solve all their problems.

Leftie 1: "Hey, Leftie 2, my car broke down. What do I do?"

Leftie 2: "Duuh. Boycott and protest!"

Leftie 1: "Oh yeah!"
