BESET by low ratings and an increasingly unpopular war in Iraq, US President George W. Bush concluded today that perhaps all his trash talk in the war on terror was not such a good idea.
At a news conference with his British ally Tony Blair, Mr Bush expressed regret for calling for terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden to be brought in "dead or alive" and taunting Iraqi insurgents by saying "bring 'em on". The blunt-speaking Texan said it was "kind of tough talk that sent the wrong signal to people. I learned some lessons about expressing myself maybe a little in a more sophisticated manner."
"I think in certain parts of the world it was misinterpreted and so I learned from that," Mr Bush said during an extraordinarily humble 50-minute session with reporters at the White House.
The US president's popularity rating here has sunk to 31 per cent largely because of dissatisfaction with the Iraq war three years after the invasion to oust dictator Saddam Hussein.
oh yeah this is good
funny, no sound bites?, just this papers opinion
I watched it. I thought he did a very good job, better than usual with his public speaking. I wouldn't quite call it "regret."
I guess with his popularity rating that low, he really has nothing to lose.
"The US president's popularity rating here has sunk to 31 per cent largely because of dissatisfaction with the Iraq war three years after the invasion to oust dictator Saddam Hussein."
IT'S THE BORDERS STUPID!
Don't be a thread hijacker.
He never existed.
Marketing is a wonderful thing.
Great. Next thing you know he'll be "nuanced". My kind of guy.
The President's tough talk against terror was a good thing.
The past 4.5 years has been a lie?
Bush is pretending that the war is the reason his numbers are so low and not the border. What a wimp he is turning out to be. If he actually said this he should be ashamed of himself! Everyone was proud of his tough stance at the beginning. Look at him now.
ping
This isn't an immigration thread.
Just saw much of Bush's press conference with Tony Blair on C-SPAN. I'll give W. this -- he had a very good little riff on (against) the U.N. I'm a red-meat guy, and this was W. at his best.
if your going to talk about his low numbers it should be.
I am speechless.
If it is even true that President Bush said this I think he has bigger problems than he thinks he does. I don't think the Iraq War is the cause of his low percentages. Especially among Republicans this is not the reason.
I think he needed to talk tough after 9/11 and I supported him going to war in Iraq, and still support the war.
My issue is the wide open borders and the way he kisses up to Mexico, who has never ever been a friend to the US. If you think Mexico is our friend, look up past UN votes and make note of how often Mexico votes against the US.
Nearly all of this latest crop of FR disruptors seem to have registered in 2005. I'm guessing there is a concerted attempt to divide Republicans for the 2006 elections by turning every thread into an immigration fight.
They earlier tried it with the ports issue, but were foiled once everyone found out Schumer was behind that one! :-)
There are some real dirt-eaters on some of the GOP-related threads. We need to call these people out, whether they're trolls or not. They are bad for morale.
This is just too depressing, really.
you guys just don't get it
you are not living in a bubble, the border is a very serious issue.
if the GOP wants to be the big winner they will need to address the border issue.
remember perot?
i come from a heavy military family and the military community is pi$$ed.
those who are do not know their history are doomed to repeat it!
this is not about the party.
getting late need spell check
lol
Sure.
I'm afraid "us guys" are on to "you guys."
whatever, i want the GOP to win but they won't w/ their heads in the sand
---This isn't an immigration thread.---
They're all immigration threads now. That issue is going off like an air raid siren. You can't avoid it. If Bush came out and said Americans first, build a fence, secure the border, and we'll have town hall meetings and a national discussion about what to do with the 12 million illegals already here, his numbers would go up, war be damned.
well i hope "you guys" sleep well w/ "us guys" on that wall
bunch of lemmings
i will try to make a difference in the primaries
after that i will hold my nose and vote rino
enough said
The short answer is if you are going to fight make sure you have the machine gun and the other guy has the rocks.
We have the B52s. We should have leveled Fallujah.
We should level Syria and Iran. We should do the Dresden thing.
When you march to War, prepare to make the other guy die!
"We should level Syria and Iran. We should do the Dresden thing."
yes! Patton! Victory!
not this whimp metroman crap
Oh, non-wimpy and self-appointed expert meriting high accolades, could you edumacate us on the history of this darned place?
Bush may be a lot of things, but he NEVER pretends to be anything. Perhaps it's a bit of projection on your part? However, since he's such a "wimp" I guess you can do better? YOU fight a war on 2 fronts, the constant lies and badgering by the press, a congress that would rather hold hands with Dems than with their president, Dems who try every tactic in the world to bring him down, an intelligence service that has/had to be cleaned to be effective but in the meantime is leaking dangerous secrets like a seive, and his pathetic, whiny "base" who expect him to be able to solve everything in the blink of an eye just because they think their issue is the most important one in the world. So since YOU seem to have all the answers, go for it.
France?
you know esss...car...go...
"and his pathetic, whiny "base"
i think i just saw flashes of red!
your right , poll numbers show that democrats have always have a negative view of the president, and his approval rating with them hasnt changed, the movement in the ratings have come from a loss of supporters from the Republican Party.
Of all people the president should know that conservatives want to be tough with security law and order, they wanted him to call evil for what it is evil, whether it was abroad or at home.
He seems to be backpedaling now by saying he needs to be more sensitive about terrorism, and coupled with his ideas about touchy feely compassion for Latin Americans whom prop up evil governments yet he wants us to assimilate their people and views here but that just leads to a lack of concern for the security US citizens at home.
It appears that he is now not very serious about national security , which is too bad because that topic is the winner for the American people, lets just hope this faction wont end up steering the party and that these views will just be the lame duck views of the liberal center, and a historic president who said some tough talk and acted on it at one time ...
but i am not upset about the war
what about "us guys"?
Oui, c'est comme ca. Tu es tellement foux, connard.
sorry bud I SPEAK ENGLISH.
translate please
what about "us guys"?
Who is "us guys?"
I'm certainly not upset about the war. I get to see how successful it is. The media has no ability to influence me on that. I know just how much they are lying to the masses about it.
i know what a canard is in english and it sound like a rino
Funny, I come from a military family as well. Every generation, including my sons. We're actually rational enough to figure out Bush has a pretty full plate and with the RINO's in the senate a compromise is about the best he's going to get. Since this issue hasn't been dealt with for several decades, it's going to have to evolve. I don't really know what he can do...congress has to approve because they dole out the funds and write the laws to make border security happen. Perhaps those of you who are so concerned that every thread becomes a "border thread" (please note: not everyone here thinks that's the most pressing issue of the day) and since you also seem to have all the answers, quit complaining behind your computer screen, get off your butts and do something. Run for congress, hold town meetings, whatever, just quit complaining on every thread...you're beginning to sound like mindless drones and FR is becoming a DU clone.
i come here because i know the du is evil
you guys push base away and think it's a joke
war - i agree
economy - i agree
border - i do not agree
i'm 2/3 w/ you why is it a problem when i don't agree 100%
that's being blind!
"Run for congress, hold town meetings, whatever, just quit complaining on every thread...you're beginning to sound like mindless drones and FR is becoming a DU clone."
I will vote for a conservative in the primary.
Well goodnight!
Have fun selling the country for back taxes and a vote!
Where in this article does Bush say the war is the reason his numbers are low?
Nowhere.
In fact, where in the article does Bush say he cares about his numbers at all?
Nowhere.
You read the opinion of the author of the article and mistook it for that of the President.
Would you say the reason people have been turning off their TV news and stopping their newspaper subscriptions is "it's the borders, stupid" ...
Or "it's the war, stupid"...
Or just "It's their incessant lying, stupid?"
Why?!
