This is only my personal opinion so take it for what it's worth.
I think you give Skinner too much credit simply because he is a fellow alum. Heck, I went to a Baptist College and there are some alum's there I definitely wouldn't associate with. (and not for religous reasons either)
I truly believe Skinner is blind to the amount of hate and intolerance found on his board. We've seen dem centrists banned simply because they didn't follow some of the more far-out leftist meme's promoted on DU. That leads me to one of either two conclusions; either Skinner really believes DU represents middle of the road dems or he actually endorses the far left wing beliefs espoused on DU. Don't forget who some of DU's heroes are; Helen Thomas, John Kerry, Kucinich, Dean, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc. (Please all, no pictures!!!)
I don't believe Skinner has done anything in his past life which would leave him open to blackmail or would preclude him from holding a support position with anyone in government. If I had to guess, I'd guess he's probably led a pretty vanilla life where attending some of the cocktail parties held at the Democratic Convention were highlights of his life. (or maybe some of the functions his wife may be invited to attend due to her position.)
So, the question remains why he puts up with jerks like sPitt. sPitt is a minor author who co-authored a book with Ritter. Ritter before and shortly after we went to war with Iraq was in demand because he had been an inspector and had his story to tell. All of that leads me to believe sKinner is rather star-struck. He puts us with sPitt because of who sPitt's daddy is (even though pop isn't in favor right now with the dem party) and because of the contacts sPitt himself has.
Also, consideration can be given to the fact DU is a rather successful board in that it has a good name (as in the subject matter matches the name and for example it's not as if the board's name was pffft.com with the discussions being about aardvark issues), it has a pretty large membership base and it's seasoned.
My son owns a board with a membership roster of about 2,500 members, it has/had a great name for the type of clientele it attracted and in its niche, it has an excellent name. He's owned the board for close to 8 years and at one time he was offered $25,000.00 for it. It's not worth near that now for several reasons which I'd rather not go into since I don't really want anyone guessing its name and causing any problems there. I'll just say that at one time using any of the popular keywords/phrases for a particular topic on any of the search engines, his board was in the first position and that's without any advertising.
Run with it Charles, that one phrase exhausted my talent reserve.

No, the stickiest wicket (if you were really honest) was when you called the denizens of DU cretins and you slammed Skinner. sPitt have you noticed the one's who are standing in support of you on your pentinence thread are the one's who don't know what cretin means?
Your supporters think truthout means out with the truth and in with "well, it might be true if I could only get the facts to fit."
I couldn't make it through the entire rambling post. I think I just found a cure for my insomnia. I pity any student who is expected to learn from Pitt.

Thanks for the brief on NU. I learned about CU from a post by franksolich awhile back so I took a look at it. I joined but haven't spent much time at all there. The format isn't as friendly as it is here at FR. And I'm not interested in engaging any DUers or KOSKooks in conversation so NU has no interest for me. I'm very happy here at FR, thank you.
