They spoke more openly of their desire for "empire" a few years ago. That was before a few writers publicly warned them that we Americans reject empire.

I have read many Britons, on the Right and yes, even the Left, who wail against the so-called American imperialism day and night, and yet they never blush when they quote approvingly of Kipling and Lord Kitcher's Sudan campaigns. Their hypocrisy is quite astounding.

Some Britons actually want to adopt the European route precisely to revive the British Empire. Lots of people suggest using the EU as a stealth to be the Third British Empire on discussion boards like such:
