Then perhaps you could explain since you seem to know more than I do why even after 60 years discussion of the subject has not gone away. In fact, as the film was released, two television programs broadcast segments about her, and New Line Cinema bought the rights to Black Dahlia Avenger.
Bette's death, and the nature of it, has inspired directly or indirectly many different works, from books, movies, music, television to even art.
The simple fact of the matter is you are assuming people don't care. However, in knowing far more about the case and its impact than you ever could, you should know better than to tell me whether or not you think people will care. That in and of itself is a display of ignorance on your part.

I guess you are right. 3 days and 25 posts dramatize the incredible interest in this case.
If there weren't a movie right now, 95% of the people probably couldn't tell you what the story was about and 99% wouldn't know her name. People will go to see a badly made movie about anything so don't even pretend that people really care or want to know anything more about her.
Again, it was a horrible crime. If it's personal, I'm sorry for your loss, but do you have to be so snippy just because I don't think it's the most pressing issue of the day.

I don't plan on seeing the movie. I find this case interesting and have seen several documentaries on it, incl. the one covering Hodel's son's accusations that his father was the killer (the documentary puts that theory away, although there are some intersting coincidences).
One notable thing about Short that no one is mentioning, and which may have been part of what caused her death, is that she was a hermaphrodite. Although pretty and flirtatious, and although she dated...she was unable to have sex. In fact, she was not quite 100% female. It's possible that some nut got her alone, where she flirted as usual, but when he decided he wanted more, he was quite surprised to find out what was under her skirt. Few people knew about such things back then, so it's easy (for me, anyway) to see some nutcase go berzerk.
Still, she had a sad life that ended horribly (and I guess painfully). I can't answer exactly why this case holds my interest, like it does for so many others. But it does. Maybe because the crime was so unnecessarily brutal and intentionally humiliating, and she was, it seemed, a genuinely nice gal just trying to make it on her own.
This is, in fact, a myth. Those who have taken the time to locate and read Bette's autopsy report have revealed she was neither a hermaphrodite, nor pregnant.
