Just what did happen to Cindy Sheehan
Op Ed News.com ^ | 18-Aug-2006 | Steve Janke

Blood is the fluid of life, coursing through our veins and providing oxygen to the body.

Cindy Sheehan has just been released from a Waco hospital where she was treated for exhaustion and dehydration and was transfused after losing almost five pints of blood. This ordeal is nothing compared to the heart-shattering agony of hearing the words, "We regret to inform you," a message delivered over and over as more blood seeps into the Iraq sand each day.

The dangerous amount of blood that Cindy Sheehan lost has been replenished. But medical experts can do nothing to ease the grief Casey's death has brought.

In case you are wondering, 5 pints constitutes over half the blood volume in an average-sized woman. You go into shock at the loss of just 2 pints. Most people would not survive a loss of 5 pints without medical intervention.

What gynecological condition can result in virtual exsanguination?

I've been researching, and even a delivery gone bad usually results in a loss of a pint or two -- certainly no more before doctors intervene. She didn't go for a delivery, obviously. Cancer? Symptoms of ovarian cancer rarely include heavy bleeding, and nothing in the literature I've read suggests catastrophic life-threatening bleeding.

But you know what has been linked to dramatic bleeding, up to and over half the the body's blood volume? Probably the only thing short of botched surgery? The abortion pill RU486.

Damn, this is getting weird. Lew Rockwell and now this.

my husband had to have 5 units of blood due to bleeding ulcers caused by undiagnosed Celiac Sprue.

I had no idea that he was so close to death!

But bleeding on this scale, especially since there is no evidence that Cindy Sheehan was in the hospital in recent weeks or months for any procedure, is a known side-effect of RU486:

The implication: an abortion?

OK, sure, I wouldn't see any moral hesitation on her part for having one (since she's displayed no morals otherwise), but geez, that brings up one horrifying question?

Who (or what) would ever cooperate in getting her in a position where she'd need one?

To quote my teenaged daughter: Ewwww!

I would think she lost 5 pints of crap, which would be 10% of body total, by volume.....

Other explanations become more and more remote. RU486 has the side effect of excessive bleeding. Some women will bleed for weeks. Catastrophic bleeding is rare, but not unknown, and is a logical consequence of the way the drug works on the body. For political reasons tied to the abortion debate, the side effects are underplayed.

It might be that Sheehan's fasting exacerbated the effects.

But there might be other explanations, though no one has offered one that fits the facts as well.

Five pints is not normal. Not even close. Something very serious happened.

As I said in my post, I wouldn't even be going here except for that someone at GSFP decided to make her bleeding a rallying cry for the Sheehanites. That makes it fair game in my book.

She is 49. I understand the typical age for menopause setting in is between 48 and 53. Women have been documented as having given birth when they are in their 60s.

Ummm .. I think Cindy is past the baby years Not necessarily. At 49, she's on the cusp, perhaps, but not over the hill yet. The average age for menopause is 52, so she's still on this side of the average. For the vast majority of women, menopause comes anywhere from 42 all the way to 56.

Basic question: Given the tone of the article, at least as represented by your excerpt, why would one even accept the quantity of blood stated as accurate?

True .. but it's not very common and in most cases had help getting pregnant

My guess is that she is in her menopausal years

Casey's death did not bring grief. It brought a continuation of her hatred. Her son slapped her up along side the head when he joined the military and thereby disavowed all the drivel she tried to pump into his head. Her recent actions are face saving motivated to cover the fact her son betrayed all she stands for.

Damn good question. I point out that the basic facts might be wrong. But why lie? And in any case, something happened that caused her to go to the hospital in Seattle, then get rushed to the hospital when she landed in Texas. It sure seemed serious. That she was transfused blood was reported in the press.

Maybe she thought she was too. Obviously, she has not been, um, serviced for a long time. So, when Hugo got her drunk that last night, she was only too happy to oblige. Next thing you know, bada bing...she needs an abortion.

She could have had a hemorrhage .. not uncommon and can be life threatening

Though I would question being released from the hospital so soon and then hanging out at Camp Casey instead of going home to rest

The problem with Cindy and her groupies ... they are known to lie and or blow up a story to make it bigger then it is

She could have had a hemorrhage .. not uncommon and can be life threatening But what caused the hemorrhage? Abnormal uterine bleeding is generally heavy or out of a woman's cycle. But it isn't an emergency. Everything I read talks about having a doctor check it out, maybe schedule a scan, etc, etc. Very sedate. A uterine rupture, on the other hand, happens in situations like childbirth. The uterus contracts, and if there are fibroids or other abnormalities, you can get a tear. With the amount of blood flowing through in a pregnant woman, she can rapidly bleed out. But that's what RU486 does. Actually, there are two drugs. Mifepristone blocks progesterone. That causes the uterine lining to disintegrate and kills the fetus. A second pill, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions to expel the contents of the uterus. That's where you can get into trouble, since it is essentially an artificial miscarriage, which we all know can be accompanied with excessive bleeding. The pills are taken about 4 days apart. The bleeding can happen weeks afterward. If he liquid diet affected her ability to clot, well, the results could have been very bad for her.

The only reason you ever heard of her is because she faked grief in order to prostitute and profit from it. Likewise, she faked her "hunger strike", and there's no reason to believe she isn't faking this too.

Diagnosis: fraud.
