They have a mandatory pro-bono requirement for lawyers too.

To get your law degree from Columbia, you have to do 40 hours of unpaid legal work for an APPROVED recipient.

"Approval" has been the club used in the past to prevent students from meeting the pro-bono requirement by doing work for certain conservative organizations. Pro-bono legal work for the Catholic Diocese of New York was denied because such work was "religious" and therefore "not approved".
