Frenzied speculation on Sunday Night Football about how the NFL would punish Terrel Owens after a spitting incident roused John Madden's sense of purpose. To paraphrase, "this is not what the NFL is about. Great games and who is going to the playoffs, that is what this game is about. What has happened to us?"
This affair illustrates that media failure is not only the result of bias. ...

ESPN has done to sports what MTV did to pop music. Overexposed and sensationalized the Terrel Owens and Brittany Spears of the world.
$35,000. I hope it goes to a good charity!
I listened to John Madden last night during the game, and I agree 100%....The game is about who won, its about who is going to the playoffs, its about who got their division, and its about the Super Bowl....
Its not about some juvenile idiot who makes millions of dollars and acts like an ass....if that is what football is becoming, then the coaches need to get rid of these idiots or the coaches need to be replaced....
These are suppost to be role models, you want your boy to copy this over paid, under intelligent, under classed dope?????
I don't know why he was traded to begin with....he's not classy enough to be a pimple of the south end of a jackass going north....and its about time they start to rid these dopes in this line of sports, and that goes for all the sports, not just football.....
Sure glad I'm not a sports writer....you think Rush got dumped on for his remarks, let them print mine and see how many of the whiney jackasses there are....they will be coming out the woodwork, crying in their beers: "Its not my fault, I was mistreated when I was little"....BS...spare the rod, ruin the child....
I agree with everything you posted. Here is my take; I love the game of football, I can't get enough of it. I hate the months between Feb and Aug. That being said, the game is going down hill fast, not the quality of play, but the behavior on and off the field. I'm tired of seeng players celebrate every tackle, catch, and block. They need to just shut up and get back to the huddle! It's their friggin job to make that tackle! The trash talk has gone way over the top also, this I blame on ESPN, with their soundbite driven highlites, and their smartass anchors. Stewart Scott makes me wanna puke whenever he opens his mouth. To quickly sum it up; JUST SHUT UP AND PLAY!!!!!!!!
Where have you been big John?
This has been going on for a couple of decades now. Personally, I quit paying much attention to pro sports a decade ago. I was a life-long fan of all sports but I quit the whole charade when it became apparent that it had become about celebrity and the cult of personalitis.
Honestly, 50 % of what is written about in pro sports is about contracts, crime, proposed new staduims, steroid use, free agency, agents, brawls, dating and which coach is on the chopping block. It is really only a mild diversion now.
AMEN....glad you put that point in....I agree 100% with what you added....with the huge amount of money they are making, and we are paying to get in to watch them, they should just 'SHUT UP AND PLAY' ...Oh one other thing....Brian Grumble....he has got to GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
