For the most part, I think it's fairly safe to assume that if someone isn't seeing eye-to-eye with you in regards to Iraq - especially after this week's photographic atrocities - the cause is lost. I use those in my immediate vicinity (friends, workmates, family, burrito kingpins) as the barometer for this assessment, and the fact that I feel forced into explaining my desire to see Donald Rumsfeld taken out into the street and beaten senseless with a rubber phallus, as if my train of thought still needs an explanation.
True, this isn't the most shining example of democratic action I'm wishing upon a star here, but it may help put at least one brick back into the bridge now all but demolished between us and the Muslim world. The fact that a large majority of Americans still don't see how detrimental this week was reflects a greater truth - we just don't care, and we haven't since day one of the war in Iraq, of anyone other than our over-exaggerated selves.
Yet here's another way of looking at things, a letter to the editor from one Ian Wachstein in today's Inky:
The news of prisoner abuse in Iraq is horrible news, I'm told. And I agree, to a point. But when I was approached by a friend with this subject, I found myself replying angrily that it wasn't so clear to me.
President Bush sends our troops to Iraq to wage a war and they find a people less than enthusiastic about their arrival. The troops die from contact with groups wielding modern weapons. They are blown up by suicide bombers. I assume that in addition to being brave, they are scared.
And while I don't condone cruel treatment of prisoners, the man who inappropriately sent our troops into this quagmire, who has learned not one lesson from the French and American experience in Vietnam or from the British experience in India or from the Soviet experience in Afghanistan, is now ranting about the terrible conduct of soldiers who have mistreated prisoners. He gives no thought to how scared they must be and how determined they must be, when they have a prisoner, to try to find out through whatever means they can use where the next danger and threat to their lives can be found.
So we'll watch our President beating his chest about how wonderful America is because we will not stand by and see soldiers who have made mistakes go unpunished. And the real crime, the creation of the war in Iraq, will still be turned upside down and supported by a leadership and by too many Americans who just don't and won't get it.
I spent a good portion of this weekend listening to an advance copy of the new Thermals disc, the choice track being "God and Country," with the choice lyric:
pray for a new state
pray for assassination
I can hope, see?
even if I don't believe
How dreadfully relatable, eh?

There are saner people in mental installations.
Liberalism is for peace as is Islam.
That's almost 3 years old.
I noted the same thing. Perhaps he just found it recently, and it hasn't been published elsewhere?
The lyrics, or the poster? Or, most likely, both!
I think you need to listen to some different music.
Do you have any reason to feel the way you do about our former Secretary of Defense?
So does that mean that there is a possibility that the author is cured now?
;-)
A rubber phallus?
What a bizarre suggestion for a weapon to beat someone up with.
These people really do have an unhealthy fixation on genitalia, don't they?
"So does that mean that there is a possibility that the author is cured now?"
Not holding my breath on that one. :)
Probably a wise move unless you want to break some kind of record.
:-)
I think because most of them were abused as children. It stunts their emotional and physical growth.
Figures a liberal would have a phallic fixation, being they're all about being sex-crazed.
With both hands at waist level, elbows out, I make a fist with my right hand, place it in the palm of my left hand and tightly wrap the fingers of the left hand around it.
Maintaining a fist, I then pull the right hand out of the grasp of the left hand.
Freep mail Taxman if you need assistance.
Roger that Theo.
Doesn't make the blogger any less of a nut-case, that's for sure.
Doubt it...further digging led me to another page he's authored, filled with cheap video digs at the party and even one tasteless bit on Reagan's funeral.

Absolutely pitiful.
Thanks for the warning. I'll desist. Lunatics should be kept in asylums.
