That really does help explain things. My first thought when reading this was wondering how this guy could be an engineer. Then I realized he worked in a University. And if he works in the English department that definitely helps make sense of this.

Engineers are better grounded in reality than this guy, but people working in the English department have better usage than this guy. His informal tone is fine for this forum, but there are a lot of mistakes in basic punctuation here.

I don't like to nit-pick, but there's no way an editor shouldn't understand the proper use of dashes and comma's. And, in America, we use double quotes at the first level.
