All this trouble has prompted me to read up on pet food, and it has opened my eyes to the content of some of these foods. I've decided to move away from dry food altogether, and probably transition to home-made kitty food. I had hoped to use up what's here and make it a gradual change for them. I guess it's going to be more drastic now.
I'll double check all the labels on my remaining canned food and shop very carefully going forward. This is very scary.
One of my cats has always been prone to throwing up. I'm realizing now that she's probably not been tolerating the grains or something else in the dry food. Poor baby. I just took it to be a sensitive stomach or eating too fast. They're also both a bit heavier than I'd like to see, and basically layabouts. I never considered that their diet may be part of the reason until now.
This is so disturbing. Our fur babies trust us to care for them. I feel betrayed by manufacturers who have not been diligent in assuring optimal nutritional content, or even reasonable quality control.
Here's a link on cat food. The site is by a lady vet who is very well educated & informed when it comes to cat nutrition.

You won't find these foods at grocery stores and hardware stores. They are to be found at pet food specialty stores and, often, at upscale pet stores (I cannot remember finding them at one of the big pet store chains).
P.S. I did not have to worry when the initial reports came out, a call to the manufacturer of my dogs' food assured me that they don't deal with mass manufacturers and their quality controls are much too rigid for pets to be hurt by their products.
The whole thing has had me thinking too... I think my girls will be going on the raw diet here eventually... Need to do some more research though...
