"Taking the last 10-20 seconds and showing his face, would’ve been a better move."

Sorry, I guess I thought it was obvious. Should have posted the point of disagreement. LOL.

I think doing that would have cheapened the whole thing and made it appear to be just another self-serving political maneuver.

Many people are still unfamiliar with who Fred Thompson is. This is hardball politics. Showing his face in the ad would’ve helped his campaign, not cheapened it. You’re being naive.

Let’s step back and engage in a bit of honesty. If any of us here knew for certain how best to conduct a political campaign during the Christmas holiday season we would be in far too much demand to be posting our opinions on FR. Nobody knows for sure what works. Even the best of the pros are largely in uncharted territory this year.

Maybe Fred should have been pushier. Maybe he’ll get credit for his understatement. Maybe an overtly political message attached to such powerful images would have seemed crass enough to come from the Romney campaign. Who knows. PR is a crap shoot. The candidate has to do what feels right and hope for the best. I believe that’s what Fred did with this spot. We should all hope it helps and we shouldn’t let our certitude get way out in front of our certainty.

Being new to Free Republic, you’re obviously unaware that many FReepers have been involved first hand in successful campaigns going back to Reagan and even further. Also, FR happens to be the most widely read political forum on the internet. I’d wager a bet that several campaigns check out the comments posted to FR on a daily basis.

The media has stifled Fred`s campaign effort since he first made his run official. That is a fact. Political ads are one way candidates get their message to the people, without going through the MSM.

This is politics 101. In a political campaign you want to get the widest and deepest exposure possible for your candidate. This was a great patriotic message sent by Fred`s campaign. It would have been that much better if he had attached his face, to his name at the end of the piece. Most viewers attention spans are very short. And a picture is still worth a thousand words.

Fred Thompson's ad shows him to be the adult in the room.

It is more powerful because of its simplicity and focus.

PLEASE GO POST A YOUTUBE COMMENT FOR THIS VIDEO!
Please go to the Youtube video link and post a kind reply in the comments. There are currently over 400 comments and almost all of them are endless spam from anti-war propagandists and anarchists. It is disgusting. Please post your thanks to Fred for the wonderfull piece.

The spam has too much similarity between posts and smacks of a single source or political website hit group. Now please go take back the comments from the nutcases.

Thank you!

Selling yourslef short is not advised.

The point of the ad is that Fred is not selling himself. He is showing America what is important about Christmas.

Christmas is about serving others. The Armed Forces of the United States is about serving others. Fred Thompson is about serving others-- else why give up millions in media contracts and a comfy life?

I myself have been involved “first hand” professionally in campaigns for many years. I have been paid to help make media decisions for successful candidates. Like anyone else with this experience I know that there are no clear rules for the situation the presidential candidates find themselves in this year. There is no politics 101 for a primary campaign culminating just after New Year’s. To suggest otherwise is arrogant and ignorant.

I’m sure your point was made in the staff meeting where Fred and his people agreed on their Christmas ad. The candidate had his reasons for doing what he did and it is done. Maybe they were right and maybe they weren’t. We’ll have a better idea in a couple of weeks. Pretending to know now is just pompous nonsense.

You said — Subtle but direct, competently done, above the fray of the election, saying “It’s the Holidays, let’s stop with the politics and remember what is important”

Ummm..., remembering what is important, in context with this time of the year — is not — the troops, but is Jesus, the Messiah of Israel and Him coming to be the “light unto the world” and Savior, at the darkest time of the year.

No, it should have presented the Gospel message and the “reason for the season” — and then it would not have been about politics and would have been above the fray of the election...

Regards,
Star Traveler

P.S. — Jesus, the Messiah of Israel is the reason for the season...

Re:"Politics is all about promoting your candidacy."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"There are somethings more important than politics and self."
"And Fred knows it."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I, for one, am sick to the gills of political expediency.

It's a blessing to see someone, who is running for office, promoting principle over politics, and actually doing it in a selfless, principled manner.

Fred Thompson couldn't have done anything more effective, to promote his candidacy, in my estimation.

Perhaps it's naive of me to believe it, but I think, when all was said and done about this ad, Fred Thompson made the final decision. The choice of the presentation would speak volumes about the person who presented it. He would want it to reflect his thoughts and beliefs. I believe it did so in a very positive light.

Posting braggadocios bullcrap on an anonymous website is not difficult. Taking this so personally and getting emotionally bent out of shape over how best to end a political advertisement, is not the sign of a "professional", more the sign of a juvenile.

And here I was trying to be civil with you, in keeping with the spirit of Christmas. LOL

You think I’m taking something personally and getting bent out of shape? That is truly rich. I have nothing invested in this controversy and I’m entirely calm. My only reaction to your posts on this thread is one of pity and mild amusement.

In the spirit of Christmas I was just trying to help you avoid making an ass out of yourself by pretending to know what you can’t know because it is unknowable. If you look back you will note that I never even advanced a theory, one way or the other, about whether the ad in question ended optimally. I certainly never got bent out of shape on the subject. Nor did I say anything that could be interpreted as bragging. You need to grab an egg nog and gear down a bit before you blow out a blood vessel.

Merry Christmas.
