Girl Accuses Construction Worker of Rape--an Unbelievable Outcome

Amazing--a middle school girl makes a false allegation of rape against a construction worker who is working at her school, and the result is:

a) An outpouring of support and sympathy for the falsely accused construction worker.

b) A tearful apology from the false accuser to the falsely accused construction worker.

c) A tearful apology from the false accuser's parents to the falsely accused construction worker.

d) A call for increased awareness of false allegations of rape.

e) A call for increased vigilance against construction workers.

If you picked "e", you're correct. The unbelievable story is below.

Police say girl lied about school attack Perry Hall Middle student was not assaulted, they say By Gina Davis Baltimore Sun, 1/12/08

A sixth-grade girl at Perry Hall Middle School lied about being sexually assaulted this week in a school restroom, Baltimore County police said yesterday.

Based on their investigation, police concluded that the incident did not occur, said Bill Toohey, a county police spokesman.

Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott D. Shellenberger said that prosecutors have reviewed the facts of the case and decided not to charge the 11-year-old girl.

"The [girl's] family acted extremely appropriately," Shellenberger said, "and we've decided that the situation is better handled in the family and not in the criminal justice system."

County schools spokeswoman Kara Calder said yesterday that she did not know whether the girl would be disciplined by school officials, and would be prohibited in any event from discussing the issue because of student privacy concerns.

The girl described her alleged attacker as a construction worker employed on a renovation project at the school, but police determined that he had no involvement, Toohey said.

Police said their investigation included interviewing the girl and the worker and reviewing video from one of the school's 18 surveillance cameras.

About 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the girl reported to the principal's office that a man had followed her into the restroom between classes and sexually assaulted her, police said. The girl said she fought off the man, ran out of the restroom and reported the attack to a county police officer stationed at the school, police said.

Police initially incorrectly said yesterday that the girl had admitted to lying, but soon after said she hadn't made such a confession. Though relieved to hear the girl hadn't been harmed, parents said the incident helped raise awareness about the potential dangers posed by contractors working in the buildings during the school day.

Some said school officials should consider requiring background checks and fingerprinting of contractors and their employees, as they do of teachers and other school workers. They also said construction workers should be further restricted from areas where children might be.

"I'm glad nothing happened and I feel sorry for everybody involved, but I still think maybe it was an eye-opener," said Crystal Curtis, whose son, James, 11, also is in sixth grade. "Everything happens for a reason. Maybe this is something they want to look into."

Amy Vahle of Perry Hall, whose daughter, Alexis, 11, is in sixth grade, said construction projects such as the two-year renovation under way at the school should be limited to weekends, holidays and summer.

"The school system should not allow contract workers or outside sources during school hours," she said. "Even if a school is a good school, bad things can happen. Instead of waiting for something to really happen, they should make some changes."

Calder said she did not know whether the system would begin requiring background checks of contract workers.

She stressed that while police had concluded that nothing had happened to the girl, the school had made changes in response to safety concerns.

Children were instructed to travel in pairs, more teachers were in the hallways between classes and more police were stationed at the school.

Also, construction was curtailed the day after the girl's accusations were made to give the general contractor, James Ancel Inc., time to install a separate entrance to the work zone by replacing a window with a door, Calder said. Any worker who doesn't use that entrance during school hours will be barred from the project, Principal Allen H. Zink said earlier this week.

Calder said she believed the entrance was installed Thursday and workers had returned to the 1,500-student school yesterday.

"In the past 10 years, if not more, we have had a huge scope of projects," she said. "By and large, we've been very successful at getting them done in conjunction with operating schools successfully and safely."

Calder said it isn't always possible to limit construction to off-hours, weekends and holidays.

"Our primary objective is for the work to happen before school, after school, during holidays and summer, but given the breadth and scope of projects, it isn't always possible to do the work at those times and meet the public's expectations that we improve the physical quality of the schools," she said.

Maybe I missed something. Nothing happened. But all the drama queens are using this fantasy as a call to action?

Huh?

Heck if I was the contractor, I’d probably install the separate entrance and bill the school even without the request. It looks like the workers have more to fear than the students and parents.

Maybe social services need to get involved in this case. An eleven year old girl that makes up stories about being sexually assaulted has issues that need to be addressed. It is very possible that she is being or has been molested by someone.

A friend of mine’s daughter went to school and told the counselor that she was being abused at home. It was a total lie, but the school believed it. In couselling, the girl admitted that she had been molested by the son of a neighbor, that it had been going on for several years. She had told people about it, but no one believed her because she didn’t describe it as abuse, she called him her boyfriend and talked about fearing pregnancy. Her friends thought she was nuts because she was only in grade school. But when she accused her family members of abuse, they believed her. It wasn’t sexual abuse that she claimed from the family, though. She claimed that her parents were forcing her to memorize Bible verses and see a religious counselor, who terrorized her.

A girl can accuse a boy or guy over 18 yrs old of just touching her & he is in big trouble. Seems they take the girl’s word over the boys. Then he is on sex molester’s list for the rest of his life. If its rape then I think a guy ought to be jailed. But when girls underage lie about their age & have sex with 18 yr olds who have no clue the girl is underage I do feel sorry for the guy. Girls can look so much older then they really are. The girls who are lying about their ages & having sex ought to get some punishment too. Girls also know they can easily get a guy in trouble & many will do so after a breakup.

Exactly, They are taking that attitude that just because the girl falsely accused the worker, it *could* happen. Why, the girl has found a hole in their security, a potential flaw. This was a good thing!!! Sure, the girl filed a false report and got some guy investigated by authorities... sure, the police, the press, his so-workers and family will have suspicions about him, but that's just a sad result of the event. /heavy sarc

They also said construction workers should be further restricted from areas where children might be.

I find it insulting that we are sending the message that every adult male is a potential pedophile and needs to be isolated from children as best as possible.

Maybe we need to have separate shopping hours at the mall where adult males are prohibited so that they don't turn into deranged rapists at the sight of pre-pubescent girls. I mean, we need to do something before something really bad happens, right???

Disgusting. The girl should be punished. It causes people to suspect the truthfulness of real victims.

Reminds me that in the Duke lacrosse case, nothing was every done to Crystal Magnum, an alleged prostitute, for the false charges and chaos she caused. Because of that some pundits still maintain that there had to be something to her charges. Oddly, the DNA of those men found on her - none of it belonging to the lacrosse players - was never investigated.

In the case of the young girl that I knew, the boy was a 14 year old brother of her friend. It started as a childish exploration/exploitation, and progressed for three or four years without being discovered. It was mutual, but the girl was too young when it started to even know what was she was doing. The boy was about four years older.

Yes, the girl was way too young.

A few years back there was a underage girl at a party with some friends & she said a group of boys touched her. She went home told her parents & a few of the boys were arrested. One of the boys hung himself before it came out that she was out later then her curfew & made the story up so she wouldn't get into trouble.

Those are the stories that really get to me.

This girl has already called wolf where no wolf was. She lied. How is anyone in their right mind going to believe her the next time she yells “rape”? She has used the false rape allegation card way too early in life. Even IF she’s raped in the future, will anybody believe her, due to her lieing history? I think not. However, in this world, she will probably get some poor schmuck sent up the river on a bogus charge and she will live a carefree life while the victim of her lie doesn’t. I hope she can live with what she’s done. She’s not to be trusted any further. If she said the sun rises in the east, you’d have to doubt her due to her lieing past.

I say all that because to accuse someone of rape IS A VERY SERIOUS CHARGE. It is not to be toyed with or belittled. She’d better have proof next time.

I totally agree with you.

I am worried that when its say just touching & there is really no proof but the girl's word , then it seems to me the boy/young man doesn't have too much of a defense against a liar girl. His life can be ruined forever.

I guess they should have jailed the guy for being a "male in the general vicinity of female children". Are we after good behavior or peremptory punishment.

Reeks of a throwback to the Deep South in the late 19th-early 20th century. Any black man was automatically suspected of being a rapist and a danger to white women and children.

Which profession has been proven to harbor more pedophiles, (both in total numbers and as a percentage)teachers, or pedophiles? Just whom should the children be protected from?

When a young girl makes up this type of story there is usually something else behind it.

I don’t know. I just know it didn’t happen, she lied & she was afraid of getting into trouble at home. It was taken seriously enough that boys were arrested & one is dead. maybe she was that afraid of her parents...Its just sad & tragic.
