No More “Sanctuary City” Protection For Gangs

By Walter Moore, Candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles, WalterMooreForMayor.com.

Neither Los Angeles nor any other American city should be a sanctuary for gangs.

Right now, L.A. Mayor Villaraigosa’s “sanctuary city” policy prevents our police from enforcing our immigration laws against any illegal aliens, including gang members.

This “sanctuary city” policy cost Jamiel Andre Shaw, II, his life.

Jamiel -- a young man with an exceptionally promising future -- was murdered by a gang member who was in our country illegally, and who had just been released from jail for committing other crimes.

Jamiel’s murder was preventable, and inexcusable. There is no legitimate reason to extend “sanctuary city” protection to gangs.

Our city -- and every other city in America -- should be a sanctuary for people like Jamiel and his family, not a sanctuary for gangs. I have therefore drafted “Jamiel’s Law,” a proposed City ordinance to deny “sanctuary city” protection to gang members.

We owe it to Jamiel and his family to pass this law. Regardless where you live, please contact the Los Angeles City Council today. No family should ever again have to endure such a terrible loss -- a loss that was preventable.

I'm sure everyone has heard of this tragic case. What is even more tragic is the fact that his mother was serving her country in Iraq when notified her son had been murdered just a few steps from his home.

Since SANCTUARY CITIES are everywhere across the country perhaps we ALL can join together and use Mr. Moore's proposal, letters that can be downloaded, the telephone and whatever else to end this NOW!

It only covers illegals are are caught committing crimes and no one, but no one, can object to these criminals being deported permanently once their sentence has been served.

If this guy had been deported when released from jail Jamiel would still be alive, his kid brother would still have his role model, his parents, friends and those of us who have come to know and admire him would not be mourning.

CAN WE DO THIS?

The death of this youngster made me wonder just how often this has happened. I’m sure this is not the first time. Surely someone has put 2 and 2 together before.

This is a wonderful rallying point, though. It was such a callous, cruel, and absolutely senseless snuffing of a promising young life.

PLEASE DISREGARD POST #6 -I've re-edited

You ask how often this has happened - I'm sad to say it's epidemic.

I tried to recall all that have been reported and I can't - but I do remember the 6 month old boy who was shot in the head while strapped in his carseat in the back of the car while his folks started to drive home after looking at cars.

There was the teen age girl Cheryl Green who was shot and killed in front of her home, and, and, and. To give you an idea I went to one newspaper Daily News, Woodland Hills, CA and copied just a few of the stories - one newspaper - one area. WHY DO WE CONTINUE TO PUT UP WITH THIS?

A teenager was killed Wednesday in San Pedro in a possibly gang-related shooting, police said. Miguel Osuna, 15, was shot while standing on the porch of a home in the 600 block of Sixth Street around 4:50 p.m., said Sgt. Kelly Castillo of the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division. Osuna later died at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance, she said. Detectives believe the shots were fired from a rifle at a carwash across the street of the home, Castillo said. No arrests have been made, and detectives have no suspect descriptions. The shooting is possibly gang-related, Castillo said.

Homicide victim's family speaks

By Jason Kandel on July 7, 2007 9:03 AM

Weeks ago I wrote a short story, an update, identifying a victim of a homicide that happened in June in Pacoima as Alberto Molina Jr. The headline, which I wrote, read something like “Man identified in gang shooting.” I got an e-mail from an acquaintance of the family telling me the headline was terrible. I responded, saying I would be pleased to hear from the family of Molina, to talk about the victim for a follow-up story. They agreed. Their son was not in a gang, both the family and the cops said, although the man who pulled the trigger may have been in a gang. Molina was an altar boy and an aid at his local church school in Sun Valley. What follows is the story as told to me by the family of their son who died in senseless violence one night in Pacoima

Reward offered for information in teen’s slaying

By Jason Kandel on December 3, 2007 1:43 PM

A $50,000 reward is being put up for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman who killed 16-year-old Johnny Cano, the first homicide recorded in the San Fernando Valley this year. He was shot shortly Jan. 6 near the southeast corner of Sherman Way and Van Nuys Boulevard in Van Nuys. In his story Jan. 11, my colleague Rick Coca wrote that Cano was killed as he was coming back from running an errand for his sister and was apparently mistaken for a gang member.

Man grieving over death of mother slain at Forest Lawn

By Jason Kandel on January 3, 2008 11:55 AM

A man was shot at the gravesite of his mother - Los Angeles’ first murder of the year.

Alex wrote the story. Jason Grey, 29, was visiting his mother's grave on New Year's Day when he was shot to death, becoming Los Angeles’ first homicide of 2008.

On Wednesday, Grey's stricken father and three other relatives watched as detectives examined the area around the freshly dug grave of Grey's mother, where the Elysian Valley man was standing when he was killed. “Back in the days, he was involved with a gang, but he had left,” said Erik Escobar, 32, of South Los Angeles, Grey's cousin. “He was trying to fix his life. But I'm guessing - you know, this is a public place, and probably some other rival gang found him here.” Escobar said his cousin, a father of two, was no longer in a gang and, in fact, wanted to become a parole officer.

Grey's mother died of a heart attack a couple of weeks ago, and Grey was alone at her grave site when he was shot, Escobar said.

It just doesn't stop......below is a case I heard of today. We all MUST DO SOMETHING to stop this once and for all.

Contacting our own officials and politicians and demand they stop this carnage - NOW - by calling their offices and downloading the letter at the following site is a start!

Midnight Basketball program coach hurt in alleged gang attack

LONG BEACH - A pack of gang members attacked a player and a coach of the popular Midnight Basketball Program on Thursday night, landing the 37-year-old epileptic coach in the hospital and prompting a police investigation.

The victim - who asked that only his first name, Richard, be used to protect his identity - suffered fractures to his face and hand, bruised ribs and a gash above one eye that had to be stitched up.

Richard told police he tried to stop an attack on a youth when the attackers turned on him.
