Homeless Solution (Vanity)

Posted on 05/05/2008 12:14:16 PM PDT by dsrtsage

I have thought of a way to reduce the homeless problem of many cities. Perhaps we can charter a bus or two in each city, and peruse the homeless areas. We can offer each urban outdoorsman 20 dollars and a bottle of thunderbird, if they take a ride on the bus. Each bus will then leave said city, and head west to deposit the urban outdoorsmen upon the shining steets of Berkley, California.

Where the Berkleyites will give them money to get back home to get another $20 and a bottle of Skullbuster.

Problem with your idea is that there is no such thing as "homeless" people.

Please refer to them with the proper names: drug addicts, alcoholics and mentally ill patients.

Add Austin, Ithaca and Seattle to your list of “drop off” cities.

That episode was called Night of the Living Homeless. You can watch it free online.

Ah, but you haven’t been doing your research. I’ve been reading for years about the attraction of Berkeley and San Francisco to bums nationwide. They’ve been gravitating to the most hospitable climes and political climates since the Summer of Love, at least.

I even recall a WaPo Sunday editorial from a decade ago by a (former) drug addict and bum about traveling there from Minneapolis.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are websites dedicated to finding locales with the best bennies for the professionally homeless.

Please, not Seattle. We already have enough of them as it is.

Must admit that indeed, I have not done any research on this particular topic. I just had the idea pop into my head and thought it would be amusing. Perhaps an additional time/place to do this would be the week of the democratic convention in denver.

True of many of them yes. But it's pure ignorance to put all homeless into that category.

IIRC, Rush Limbaugh had a similar brainstorm in 1989 when Martin Sheen was named the Honorary Mayor of Malibu, CA and declared it a sanctuary city for the homeless.

El Rushbo seriously entertained the idea of chartering buses, rounding up the homeless in Los Angeles and giving them a free bus ride up to Malibu ... right up to the point where he finally had an attack of good judgment and dropped the idea.

May I be so bold as challenge you to give me another catagory?

“May I be so bold as challenge you to give me another catagory?”

Well, there are bums, drifters, near-do-wells, illegal immigrants, fake veterans, the lazy, con-men, escaped criminals, and the generally shiftless.

That’s a good idea; many come with a resident alcohol content.

Absolutely. Twice a year my church (as well as other churches around Richmond) hosts homeless families who are 1) working and 2) seeking a place to live. The majority are single mothers, and of them most are minorities. They are not alcoholics, drug users or mentally ill. While yes, some are, this group is screened pretty carefully (because for a week, they actually sleep in the church building).

Many homeless are children. And sure in some cases they are the children of the alcoholics, drug users and minorities. But the children can hardly be blamed for that.

The problems you list are very real, very prevalent.

But they do not address every "homeless" situation.

I think I have the solution to the "homeless" problem. Each church/temple in America take one homeless person or family and support them on church property in an appropriate sized dwelling. That way, they would be "under the influence" of good, churchgoing people. The churches/temples would provide food, shelter, clothing, training, quality of life, counseling, health care, etc. for that one family or individual.

There would be NO government support of any kind. That way, religious people would have a real live cause to work on and the "homeless" would be dispersed and not gather at bus stations, skid row, etc. The homeless could repay the church/temple by doing odd jobs, mowing the lawn, washing windows, litter pick-up, etc, while getting training for jobs, getting detoxified and prepared to enter the mainstream.

Those who chose to opt out of the program would be on their own to survive as best they could, knowing that the option of joining the program was always there.
