You could buy them in gas stations in '55, as well in '60 and '61, just like you sometimes still can. They just weren't on the shelf of the Walgreens, Kresge's, or the local "drug store".
Condoms are centuries old technology. Although lubricated ones only go back to the mid '50 or so. (Not all condoms are made of "rubber", or other artificial material).
