Migration: Who Cares?

by: Ben Giles, July 17, 2008

Coming to the conclusion that migration should not be thought of as a distinctly national issue, authors Marie Price and Lisa Benton-Short presented data on their research of metropolitan cities experiencing and influx of foreign-born immigrants.

Their new book, Migration to the Metropolis: The Rise of Immigrant Gateway Cities, reveals that 20 major cities across the globe account for 37 million of foreign-born residents. Or, one in five immigrants will choose one of those cities as their end destination.

Audience reception to the authors’ July 15 presentation of their book was best summarized by Maryland State Delegate Ana Sol Gutierrez (Dem.):

“So what?”

By the authors’ own admission, the research leaves more questions than answers. The statistics are simple enough: immigration is a global phenomenon, with cities across the globe experiencing at minimum one million in foreign-born residents. In some cities, immigrants make up a substantial number of the areas population.

Price and Benton-Short conclude that the immigration policy is at least equally important at the local level as it is nationally.

“Integration and accommodation happens at the local scale,” said Price. “You can have national policies, but people live in places, and all sorts of things happen at schools, on streets, and in the work force. So local policies, local institutions, and local leaders really do matter.”

While research provides in-depth looks at the demographics of major metropolitan areas—such as New York City, Washington D.C., and San Francisco in the United States—it never delves into how or why immigrants choose these destinations over countless others.

The authors hope their work draws peoples attention from such a national viewpoint, and make people realize “we’re not alone. Many places in the world are dealing with these issues,” said Price....

It may be a "global phenomenon" but that doesn't mean a nation can't stop it. In 1924 that's exactly what the US did with legislation and can do so again if it so desires.

Who cares?

Only people who care about their nation.

But of course that's all antiquated thinking, right?

There are no nations now. Only the benevolent world government, dominated by the dining table invitees at Davos.

Back to Feudalism, one more time.

Look at the Japs. They are very strict and have a bare minimum of illegal immigration

They’re going robotic to make up for any worker shortages. I suppose when the entire world is in the US for purposes of “growing the economy” and saving Social Security and there’s no one left to import the country will have no choice but to do the same thing.

It’s not a global ‘phenomenon’, rather its a global agreement between the transnational corporations and the corrupt national governments to facilitate migration of low wage workers to the first world to drive down wages. See the WTO, “free trade”, and “free movement of persons” in the Doha round they are attempting to revive.

If you look at past “free trade” meetings you’ll see, especially in Africa these days, that for transnational corporations to get the deals they want in the African countries, they have to push to open migration to the first world by Africans.

The same sort of deal was wrought by Mexico in NAFTA, hence the unlimited illegal immigration from Mexico to the US.

Because the transnational corporations own our elected politicians, our politicians turn a blind eye to the sovereignty destroying effects of massive migration without assimilation, and enable the agreements to the benefit only of the transnationals.

It became obvious what free trade was all about when they left the borders wide open. They wanted free movement of goods and people and that’s exactly what we’ve been getting though they’ll never say it in so many words that was the game plan all along.

And the Japanese were always against free trade too. They exploited our stupid notions of free trade and ran up a huge trade surplus in the process

JAPAN= no illegal immigration
JAPAN= mercantilist policies that decimated US industries

CHINA= emulating Japanese mercantilism

Aside from WW2  I respect what the Japanese do as far as placing Japan as number one, keeping industry at home, not allowing themselves to be swamped by resentful illiterate 3rd worlders the way USA and Europe have

Japan is under tremendous pressure to open up their immigration system. It seems that any successful Western-type democracy that doesn’t do so is being pilloried as backward and racist. So far they’ve resisted and I say good for them.
