I can think of no reason why any eligible person with a temperament even remotely suited to being president would be unwilling to do that. Even if there are details in the records that would be embarrassing,

It may well be that the details are far more than embarrassing and provide evidence that he is dishonest and unfit to be president. Embarrassing details can be easily explained and smoothed over by the media. A revelation of self-serving deceipt would be career ending.

There is no legal reason why Obama should have to release any information which could be even remotely damaging to an eligible person. He could authorize the state of Hawaii to officially a statement resembling any of the following:

  1. Barack Obama was born within the United States sometime on or before January 19, 1974.
  2. Barack Obama was born on or before January 19, 1974, to ___ and ___, both of whom were U.S. citizens at the time, and at least one of whom had been a resident of the U.S. prior to his birth.
  3. Barack Obama was born sometime on or before January 19, 1974, to ___, who at the time of his birth had lived in the U.S. for at least five years after having turned fourteen.
There are many other ways Barack Obama could be eligible. While some might require revealing embarassing details, there must be at least one that wouldn't. Unless, of course, the "embarassing detail" is that Obama is simply ineligible.
