not all, not even most, “latinos” are mestizos.

True, although the preponderance of those arriving in Southern California from Mexico and Central America may well be.

My Spanish-speaking church congregation includes people who are obviously Maya or Aztec, among the Mexicans: they look just like the carvings. We have Peruvians with distinctive Inca features. Colombians, Argentinians, and Puerto Ricans, along with some of the Mexicans, often look like undifferentiated "white" Americans; often more tan than I am, but not more than those of my children who picked up the Cherokee skin tone from their dad. Panamanians and Cubans can appear pure European, or be black.

Nice observation.

PS, Great tag-line, it made me smile and chuckle.

Trust me:
In L.A. "Latino" means mexican.
Yes, there are other Latin American immigrants and, yes, they have physical differences.
But, Mexico and (now) Salvador proivide the problems that others either suffer or attempt to copy.

Also, IIRC, Cheryl Greene did not come from Highland Park, she lived about 25 miles south.

Fact of the matter is that ethnic groups tend to follow other ethnic groups.
Italians edged out Irish, who had edged out Germans and Poles, and so it goes. Cambodians and Vietnamese have edged out "others" to form their own communities in the same period as this article discusses,
Diference is that it is easier to get shot if you get crosswise in the Latino (sic) vs Black interface.
