Tariffs? Ever heard of Smoot-Hawley? I think not. How’s about cutting union power and reducing government regulation? Oh yeah, and repeal Sarbannes-Oxley.

We could never lower wages enough to compete with the third world hell holes ...out jobs were sent to...same old same of free trade bs. Free trade is the devil.

Not even close. With minimum wage laws driving up the cost of unskilled labor and taxation to support those who aren't producing, we can't compete. We are no longer the only industrialized nation as was the case just after WWII. There is now competition. We can't command any price we want because others can easily undercut those prices.

Free trade is reality. Figure out how to compete.

The UAW ate the American car manufacturers...not to mention making some butt ugly vehicles. Motorola has been losing market share for some time. Their products just are up to the quality of earlier years. Their competition makes a better product. The consumer has spoken. IBM voluntarily walked away from a PC market where they could not compete on price or quality. They would be out of business if not for the midsize and mainframe product lines. Even those are threatened by commodity hardware and open source operating systems.

Free trade is what bring a plethora of products within the price range that most can afford. It puts fresh fruits and vegetables on your table all year round. The only people complaining are the union hacks who have priced themselves out of the market.

Sure we can... we just need to put the same trade barriers in place as other countries...Korea won’t allow American companies...bye bye Korean cars-not hard. Japan won’t allow competition then we place the same barrier on these countries as they place on our business-not difficult. As for competition. How much will we spend when these policies result in socialism...as they are close to doing so now.

Free trade is destroying this country. I can do without melamine tainted baby formula, dog food that kills dogs, toys with lead paint, TV’s that are so crappy you have to have an iron clad warranty and appliances that are cheap and break easily. The crap this brings into the country makes us dependent in very bad ways and will lead to socialism.
As for cars, GM makes some great cars. I am sick of people bashing their own country’s products...it’s un-American. I buy vegetables in season. If you have ever traveled to Mexico...I don’t want to eat their produce-they have no food protection laws and extremely poor sanitation. I am for COOl-country of origin labeling and will not buy food from overseas. We need to get back to making things in order to have a prosperous capitalistic country...trade is not helping anyone but India and China and will destroy this nation.

The rest of the world has trade barriers...a tariff by any other name for most products. Why should our markets be open while other countries are closed?

Marx was correct and so are you. Free trade as practiced now will lead to socialism.

Right now we do not have truly free trade. But to the extent it is free we prosper.

Let's add up the ways the Chinese are our masters. They work for nearly free to make and sell goods to us far cheaper than we can make them for ourselves thus enabling us to enjoy a higher standard of living.

In return they receive pieces of paper called US dollars which are worth no more or no less than the US government wishes them to be. Then they stockpile these dollars because they would be worthless if redeemed all at once.

While they have held these promises to pay promises they have decreased in value on a world wide trade weighted basis by over 40% in the past 5 years. Real smart masters.

So they trade blood, sweat, and treasure for pieces of paper. They won't always be so stupid so enjoy it while you can.

Do you really want to pay a UAW union member over $70 per hour to make a car for you? Do you want the government to REQUIRE you to buy what they make no matter how piss poor it is (remember the 70’s domestic cars)?

If someone, some company, or some country wants to give you a free car would you complain? Probably not, so why complain if it is 20% - 50% off? We should celebrate when the Chinese sell cheap because we get a bargain and they go broke.

We owe them almost a trillion dollars. I fear them far more than a fellow American. They continue to screw with our currency. How about this...if you live in Taiwan, better find some place else, we will soon let the Chinese have their way...how can we argue with our bankers. As for prospering. We have not prospered. Our standard of living has declined every year because of free trade. Also, China is not growing as much, but they are not broke. They have lots of money...American is broke. Also, union autoworkers do not receive 70 per hour. This is a lie...they throw in legacy (cost for retired workers) in this calculation. They make about the same as the transplants in terms of wages. The union will take over legacy in 2011...if not sooner under some deal worked out this year.

Actually they hold TWO trillion in Treasuries alone. Ask yourself what happens when they try to cash in all those Us Treasury notes?
What will they receive in return? They will get dollars. What can you do with dollars? Well you can try to trade them for something else which we call purchasing something. So ultimately those dollars are only good for some US made goods, property, or services.

God help the rest of the world if they all try to cash in by buying our stuff all at once. It is all coming to end since soon enough the world will not want our pieces of paper and will require that we give them real things instead, like gold or minerals or real products.

When that happens we can go back to the 30’s. I can't wait to see Americans knitting socks again and I'm sure you will enjoy paying $10 a pair for them.

Legacy cost count since the current UAW members negotiate the contract that pays those costs. It is money the companies have to pay. Yes the UAW takes over those cost but only because of the massive (5 billion I think) amount of money given to them by the manufacturers just for that.

You keep harping about socialism. Unions are the epitome of socialism. Collectivism forced down the throat of a company using political pressure from socialist cronies in the government. Unions hate "right to work" states. Why? Because it defangs them. They lose political muscle. When left to their merits, people tend not to join. If unions actually had something worthwhile to bring to the table, they would have no problem recruiting members. They would have no need of having laws passed to give them special control over people who simply wish to be employed by a company, not controlled by a union.

If you sincerely believe that crap is being imported into the country, then manufacture something better. Market it at a higher price. Convince the consumer that you are bringing better quality to the table and that it is worth the price differential.

Free trade saves me money and provides variety. I'm a discerning consumer. I can tell the difference between quality and crap. I purchase the former and leave the latter on the shelf.

Standard of living? You looked around lately?

Countless have and are losing their jobs, homes, retirements, saving, investments..

You can't send send hundreds of thousands of our jobs and industries overseas to China and India, and then allow into the U.S. tens of millions of low wage illegal workers.

This is national suicide.

Don't believe me? Look around.

If another country chooses to mis-allocate capital, so that it places it’s limited resources in industries which are less than competitive on a world market basis, it reduces it’s total wealth in the long run. That’s why. As Napoleon said, “When your enemy is making a mistake, don’t interrupt him.”

Your post is so full of globalist talking points, where to begin?

Free trade is what bring a plethora of products within the price range that most can afford.

People out of work due to "free trade" off shoring and outsourcing of jobs can't afford to buy products.

It puts fresh fruits and vegetables on your table all year round.

We had that before "free trade", then Mexico, South America and other countries with incentives paid for by the American taxpayer as part of the falsely named "free trade deals", with lower phytosanitary standards and peon labor put American farmers out of business. In return for the unconstitutional use of our tax money to bolster foreign agriculture,we have lost our high food safety standards to filthy contaminated and sometimes poison food products. Such a deal!

The only people complaining are the union hacks who have priced themselves out of the market.

That's baloney.American citizens have lost authority and sovereignty to the globalists through "free trade". We have lost our domestic economy. We are about to lose our country.

So you’re happy that America has become an immoral unethical “free trade” driven country, with socialism or communism just around the bend for all the out of work citiznes? I for one do not wish my government to inflate the money supply to fleece Chinese slaves. “free traders” are basically low lifes who care nothing for their country and what is right, according to your post.

Americans want their neighbors to prosper as they want to prosper themselves. When people earn a decent living they give much more back to their community and country. “free traders” want slavery to return to his country. It has in many ways, due to “free trade” agreements with high human trafficking countries and the blind eye our government turns to illegal aliens used by criminal businessmen in this country. The Dept of labor in 2002 admitted there were at least 140,000 slaves working IN THIS COUNTRY. This has all happened since the “free traders” usurped our government. Forty years ago people would have laughed at the thought that slavery would return here. And yet, you “free traders” have brought it back.
