Are Boston firemen scamming the system?
The Virginian ^ | 1/20/2009 | Moneyrunner

Between 2003 and 2006, the city paid $43.5 million to hundreds of firefighters on injury leave - all of it tax-free. Among the recipients: 132 firefighters who collected more than $100,000 each during that period. Of those, 20 received between $200,000 and $337,000, according to a Globe analysis of city payroll records. ... Taken together, nearly 20 percent of the department's payroll goes to fund injured leave and overtime pay. ... Injured-leave pay is full wages, tax-free. Disability pensions are 72 percent of pay, also tax-free. ... Fire Commissioner Roderick L. Fraser, who took the post 13 months ago, said he was astonished to learn recently about what he describes as an abuse of the system - that scores of men remained on injured leave status for two, three, or four years before department officials and then the Boston Retirement Board processed their disability retirement applications.

Disability at 72% pay = $337,000

That means normal pay = $468,056

For what?

I am going to have to stand up for our Firefighters on this one. They have the most dangerous job of all and a majority of them are injured on the job. A large number of firefighters contract cancer from being exposed to dangerous chemicals and most end up with either heart problems or back injuries. Statistics reveal that firefighters live an average of 7 years after retirement, due to sickness and injuries from the job.

Talking from experience. They deserve every penny they get when they are disabled.

Talk about the money taken from state coffers from illegals and prisoners... not firefighters.

That may fly on general principle but this is Massachusetts we're talking about. Odds are much higher that they have learned to scam the system, just like the railroad workers in New York who were recently written about.

No surprise to me. I’ve always felt that “fire fighters” get far too much credit and do far too little to justify it. Most of the time, they sit around doing nothing, most of the calls they make involve zero danger whatsoever. The police get no credit, work a far more difficult and important job and get nothing but criticism for a genuinely dangerous job, but everyone drones on and on about “fire fighters”.

Can we put them in charge of healthcare?

At least firefighters still run into burning buildings. And they haven’t fought court battles all the way to SCOTUS to have it declared that the police have no responsibility to protect individuals. Have another donut, and policeman don’t even make the top 10 in any work place death lists. Loggers and fisherman and even cab drivers rank far, far above them.

“Have another donut”? Are you kidding me, what do you think those lard-ass firemen do all day, sitting around the station doing nothing? Gimme a break. And the dirty little secret is how many of the wild-fires these yo yo’s actually start themselves. A friend of mine was a consultant to a large southern California city’s fire department, and he said we’d be astounded at how prevalent that practice is. Also, loggers and fishermen die more often because they are untrained, careless and out of shape, unlike the police.

Not biting. Neither department will get bashing from me. But I do know a lot more lousy cops than firefighters. However, I would never say all cops are bad, because they aren't.

Also, I haven't read about any firemen wadding up the constitution and wiping their backsides with it lately.

Mr. Tough Guy here can't say the same.

I’m as against the income tax as anyone could possibly be, but I’m curious about how (in Boston of all places) they got it exempted.

Regular salary = taxed, but the same salary on injured reserve does away with taxes? I know they want everyone to be in a perpetual state of dependent sickliness with imaginary ailments, but to open up a tax loophole like that?

oh geesh.....its the policemen and the firemen and the military men and its the teachers......next we'll hear that its really the postal workers that have the hardest job of all........

baloney.... there are firemen that scam the system.....at least some of them do......

Most anyone presented with easy money for doing nothing goes for it....why do you think SS disability is so huge?....why do you think they can't print enough handicap stickers?....

lets face it.......we've developed a bunch of welfare kings and queens in this country who will rip off anybody at any time at any price....
