To me they were long haired, dope smoking, hippies

they ended their short career with that style. much of there early stuff was immature.... ...but their middle period (and a goodly amount of the drug induced stuff at the end) was genius.

I respectfully disagree somewhat with what you said.

Their early hits - like Please Please Me and From Me To You - may seem "immature" compared to their great middle period (Rubber Soul, Revolver) - but at the time of their releases, they were quite fresh. In fact, songs that followed those two hits, like I Want To Hold Your Hand and I Feel Fine were considered structurally progressive and quite innovative for 1964 - far ahead of what most were doing.

Otherwise, I agree wholeheartedly with what you said.
