Just yesterday I read about 22-year-old WNBA star Candace Parker, a player considered essential to the success of the league, who is expecting a baby in the spring. She is not the first WNBA star to have a child mid-career -- Lisa Leslie missed an entire season when she had a child -- but as the "new face" of the league there has been some grumbling by some fans and sports writers that Parker is letting everyone down. But overall, the league and coaches and teammates have been supportive.
Parker told the Los Angeles Times that she wanted her children to grow up witnessing the athletic career of their young mother rather than arriving after it ends, and the league commissioner acknowledged that. Candace can be a very usable symbol of how you can have a family and a career.
Chances are that Parker

Kinda selfish...on the part of the fans and sports writers who are grumbling. It’s her life and she and Sheldon Williams are more than finacially stable enough to have a child.
WNBA, what’s that?
Anyone get the overnight ratings from the last televised game?
Anyone know why it takes over $200 to take 2 people to an NBA game?
Sounds more like the Lesbians are grumbling.
WNBA... while not a fan of the league by any means, its about the only place you will find something even remotely resembling true basketball on TV. You know, where Carrying, Traveling Etc are rules that are called.
The athletic talent is equivalent to High school boys championships, at best.
I added that Parker is married to Shelden Williams of the Sacramento Kings
And your point is....?
Money.
I can watch the same level of BBall free on the local PBS station.
And what does this story have to do with how you spend your money (or not)?
Gee I thought this was a nice story about championing motherhood.
Instead of choosing to respond to this story with positive posts, it seems some people will always take the opportunity to slam women’s sports and women of a certain sexuality.
I “slammed” neither. I was critical of the athleticism involved. I presume that anyone critical of Opossum’s policies is a “racist” to you.
Not equivalent in any major city....In Houston even some private Christian schools have nearly 7 foot players who are good. The best boys’ HS teams are amazing in basketball, football, and baseball.
I’ve been to BBrook HS to watch her play. Our local school is in the same league and I am proud of her achievements. Likewise that she carries a (for me) familiar banner with her. I even chose to watch her play (for free!) on the local PBS station.
I played competitive BBall since JHS. There are 14-year-old boys in her old HS that could school her today.
“I was critical of the athleticism” — how is that not a slam? Women’s athletics can’t compare to men’s — accepted. Those women are doing the best they can — why do you have to criticize?
(And someone else chose to pick on lesbians — I didn’t say you did.)
My point is — why bring up the athleticism (or anything else irrelevant)? This is a story about showing how women don’t have to sacrifice their children to have a career (and/or vice versa).
Next time, consider choosing to stay on topic and be positive.
Oh, and jumping to conclusions about how I feel about Obama does not have any relevance either — why bait people like that, unnecesaarily?
(and btw you’re wrong, if you bothered to read anything else I wrote...)
Being properly chastised by the ATRM, I'll cease my efforts to engage anyone else on this thread in a discussion.
BTW, do you know who the assigned TSM (thread spelling moderator) is? I may have had a few mistakes up-thread and wish to apologize to that mod, too.
I don’t slam women, or lesbians. I do slam fat women, and especially fat lesbians.
Then again, I am redundant.
It’s not about monitoring — it’s about reserving scorn and contempt for those who deserve it — saving our energies and not having this in-fighting.
Why are you at odds with me? All I’m trying to do is present a positive role model and not have the discussion diverted to negative avenues.
Now please, we’re (more than likely) on the same side here (on most topics) — stop the confrontational talk and show you can recognize when you’ve picked the wrong battle.
Cuz you're too thin skinned when it comes to female athletics.
