A war of ideas and view of the world. Striped to the essentials, one side views the cosmos as created by a higher intelligence, God, who is and has been active in man's affairs and that man is thus accountable to.
While the other side see all actions and results as the outworking of strictly materialistic forces and rejects the above as myth fable and quaint naivety.
It's less science than interpretation of the evidence.
