I couldn't believe they'd been hoaxed that badly--the 'zebra stripes don't show on black and white television' reminded me of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoons--the episode where Calvin's father explains that old photographs are black and white because the world was black and white back then.

My first theory was that someone had somehow created a beautiful imitation of a Snopes page, complete with spoofed url, but I went looking, and I found the explanation link at the bottom of the references section of the wiki link you gave.
