Where to shoot near Dallas(north Dallas)?
self | 15 March, 2009 | marktwain

I am visiting my children in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I intend to take them shooting today, but I have not been to a range in the area for a few years. My daughter lives in the northern part of Dallas and we want to go shooting pistols this afternoon. I would appreciate any suggestions about ranges or places that would be available for us to shoot.

In Arizona, where I live, it is fairly easy to find places to shoot on public land, as about 85% of Arizona is publicly owned land. However, most of Texas is privately owned, so I may be limited to public ranges.

Thank you all for your assistance. Free Republic is my home on the net.

Places to shoot are becoming more difficult to find all the time. We should all work to insure that the next generation has places where they can learn about and enjoy shooting.

Too bad you didn’t let me know sooner. A couple of Freepers have a lease on the outskirts of Dallas.

There’s a range on Duck Creek Road, west of Sanger, in Denton County, and one in McKinney on 380.

Elm Fork Shooting Range - Dallas, Texas
From Interstate 35-W (Dallas), exit Loop 12/Northwest Highway and travel west 1.2 miles. Turn right (north) onto Luna Road and proceed approximately .1 mile. Turn left into the entrance of Elm Fork Shooting Park. Proceed through the gate and follow the road to the left of the range house to the range at the far west end of the property.

From Highway 114 (Irving/Las Colinas), exit Loop 12/Northwest Highway and travel east 1.7 miles. Turn left (north) onto Luna Road and proceed approximately .1 mile. Those two are too far north for me. It’s bad enough I have to travel for a MeetUp group every month.

Here’s a tip for people who can’t join a private club. There’s clubs that sponsor matches every weekend. If you belong to the NRA or any of the endorsed shooting match associations, you can participate at the matches even if they are at closed membership clubs. Here’s another tip so you are invited back next time. Take the time and effort to help during the match. Become a safety officer, help paste and move targets and above all, help break the equipment down when it’s over. Arrive late and leave early and you won’t be invited back.

A lot of what I have read says the best place is the grassy knoll near the Texas School Book Depository.

There’s an outdoor range in the Northeast quadrent of the metro area in Garland. Garland Public Shooting Range.

2606 Pleasant Valley Road.

http://www.eaglepeakshootingrange.com/gpsr/gpsr.htm

From the site:

10.00 for a lifetime range card. It’s a one time fee and doesn’t expire unless you do!

Then it’s $10.00 every time you come out to shoot.

You can shoot all day, bring as many guns as you want, and go anywhere on the range you want!

We rent spotting scopes as well as hearing and eye protection for $2.00 each.

We also have several rifles and handguns for rent for $12.00 plus the cost of ammunition.

The McKinney range is east of US 75 on highway 380.

I’ve been to both of those, but have only shot at McKinney

Other ranges

Just south of 121 and west of I-35E

Forget the Collin County Gun Range in McKinney

Again from the site:

The Collin County Gun Range, formerly located at 2452 East University Drive (U.S. Highway 380) in McKinney, Texas has closed after a long zoning battle with the City of McKinney. We have ceased public range operations.

Too bad it was a nice range, with nice facilities.

Bass Pro Shops has an indoor range at their Grapevine store. Not sure about the store at Garland. Have fun!
