Best Army Base to live?
Me

Posted on 04/21/2009 6:15:11 PM PDT by foobarred

Wifey and I are moving to a military base. She is going active duty as an Army nurse. We are looking at Ft. Campbell, Ft. Knox and Ft. Bragg.

Can anybody make any recommendations?

Thanks!

I would live at the base that she will be assigned to. Makes commuting much easier.

What other choices? Fort Campbell is not so hot.

My pick might be Fort Carson in Colorado.

Depends on where you make your reservations. Make sure you get a 4 star base because they’re the only ones with room service.

I'm not sure of your circumstances, but I'm speculating that they're offering her a choice of assignment if she reenlist. If that is the case, get the assignment agreement in writing before reenlisting. When I enlisted I had a verbal agreement with the recruiter and was surprised to find my bus heading to a different base on the day I showed up.

Ft. Huachuca, AZ

Right now they are in the middle of the transborder visitors but there is not enough there to give them a reason to hang around.

If you like the outdoors, lots of wonderful national parks, history and touristy places close by (Tombstone 30 minutes)to occupy your idle time.

"Tombstone 30 minutes"

Note: Low speed limit on that road. Cops drive normal looking pickups. Just sayin'.

Fort Wainwright was my favorite.

My pick might be Fort Carson in Colorado.

Excellent choice. He'd get hiking in the mountains in the summer, skiing/boarding in the winter. Denver is not too far away if you want something from a big city. Colorado Springs is a very military friendly town. There are something like 300 days of sunshine a year, low humidity, moderate temperatures. The four corners (where-ever they are, really) and the Mesa Verde area are not too far away. Royal Gorge very close, Santa Fe not too far away. Even the Grand Canyon is only a day's drive. Vegas a long day's drive. White Sands NM, Roswell NM, all within driving range...

True, but you can make up for it in the summer. LOL!

First, Army has posts, not bases. Ft. Huachuca was really nice. I had my daughter there. It’s small and not much in town. Great if you like the outdoor stuff. Never seen so many humming birds in my life. Have to go to Tucson for shopping and fun. Ft. Sam, in San Antonio is nice, but I’m a little biased because it’s home, lol. Lots to do there, but too crowded for me now. I’m near Ft. Hood now and I like Killeen pretty well, and it’s close to home, and not too big. Germany, anywhere! Would go back in a second! Hawaii was wonderful too. Hubby was at Kunia, and we lived on Wheeler. Fun tour.
