Because, as Shelomo Alfassa so correctly points out in his article, "Benjamin Nathan Cardozo (1870-1938) was the first Hispanic Justice in the US Supreme Court." Hispanic generally refers to people of Spanish ancestry or heritage. Cardozo was of Portuguese extraction.
