‘Golf’ is not a verb.

Thank you! I hate that. Nobody goes "baseballing" or "footballing."

Golf is not a verb. One does not golf. One plays golf.

Grammar policeman isn’t a job, but that doesn’t stop people from pursuing it as a career.

It’s a pet peeve for many golfers. The noun golf is widely misused as a verb. That’s not to say there isn’t a proper use as golf as a verb, but that’s rarely the case. Professional writers make the mistake constantly and it irks me to no end.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to be a smart-aleck, but being critical of a person’s grammar on a message board is a pet peeve of mine. It is an informal setting.

Funny how different people have different pet peeves.

Thank you , thank you, thank you. As an avid golfer, I cannot stand it when people use the word "golfing".

On occasion, and sometimes for even several holes in a row, I have been known to play something that resembles golf.

It's still golf, but we just suck at it. I am a scratch player, but I'd be hard pressed to break 95 on a PGA setup with greens running 12-13 on the Stimp meter. I played a PGA setup not long after a tourney once and 4 putted 5 times. Two of those were with 2-3 footers for par and I blew it by the hole 6-8 feet. Let's put it this way, I hit 12 greens and 10 fairways and shot 98. And yes, there was a snowman in there too with no penalty strokes and no impossible lies. It gives you a whole new respect for how good those PGA Tour Pros really are.

Yeah, I should requalify that and say that I have been known to play something that resembles golf - ON MY LOCAL MUNI. I'm a walking scorer when the Nationwide event comes to town. I don't know the Stimp rating for how they set up the greens, but they are quicker than anything I've played. Most every one of these guys has an excellent short game and can really roll the ball, and they can do it under pressure.

It is still golf, and even though we suck at it hope springs eternal on every tee box. It's a game for optimists, and you must play in the moment, not thinking about the last shot, and thinking very little about the next shot.
